How to get a elephant ear corm ready for Winter ?

Asked by PaulD111 (8points) October 10th, 2014

We have a huge elephant ear plant on our deck – so far as I know,
before the first hard freeze we must cut off all the leaves, remove the corm ( a big bulb ) from the container and put it in a paper bag of dirt in the basement – anyone done this ?

I would guess you want to keep it in barely moist soil and not let it dry out. But don’t over water it either. Maybe check the bulb to make sure it’s not drying out and water accordingly. It’s dormant, don’t over do it. Don’t let it freeze, keep it in cold but not freezing temperatures. I’ve read about them in books but never tried growing one.

I’ve kept mine in an unheated garage in a plastic garden pot in peat moss/loam mixture. It never got below freezing in the garage. Some varieties are winter hardy in growing “zone 8” or higher and can be left in the ground. But, you have it in a pot you can l just move it to an unheated area.
