Are people who post portrait video trolling?

Video taken in portrait is only possible in a world in which people have never had to watch a video taken in portrait.
At this point, shouldn’t Apple, Android, and Microsoft be disabling the cameras on their phones if people can’t be bothered to hold their phones correctly? Sure, Android phones complain when you attempt to take portrait video. But it really should disable the phone – or self-destruct/blow up – if people ignore the warning.
Since it’s highly unlikely that people who record these videos have never actually watched one of their videos, the only reasonable conclusion is that they are trolling for “I am going to punch you in the throat” reactions.

The error is not in the way they are recorded. The error is the way they are watched.
You’re only supposed to view those videos while eating tacos.
Oh man. Now I really want a taco.
Eh, I think the option should be there, just maybe with a few hoops in front of it, so that… er, average users won’t be able to reach it.
I understand each word of what you wrote, but I don’t have a clue what you are really asking. I can’t imagine how this (holding a smartphone camera in one orientation or another) is something that is heinous enough for the cell manufacturers to take seriously.
This strikes me as a “nanny state” sort of complaint.
@elbanditoroso: “This strikes me as a “nanny state” sort of complaint.”
Good catch. This question was actually a thinly-veiled attempt to gain support for a mandatory bib policy in the U.S. to be regulated and enforced by a new government agency (Department of Clothing Protection) and Stain Czar.
Eghhhh I can’t even begin to explain my hatred for this. There are so many potentially good videos out there that are ruined because the jackass didn’t know to rotate their phone 90 degrees. I really don’t understand how this happens either I mean anyone watching a video on a smartphone immediately turns it 90 degrees as to enlarge the screen, it should be rather obvious that you should do the same whilst filming.
You’ll get a kick outta this video @hominid
@Dutchess_III the video I posted explains it, I’m sure you’ve encountered it before.
I suspect that the thought process is something like:
“I want to take a video of this!”
“Which way should I hold the camera to best capture all of the action I want to film?”
“I know – portrait! Obviously portrait.”
“But wait… can I even post a video in portrait? What if I’m forced to post it in landscape even though I didn’t shoot it in landscape?”
“Nah, that’s ridiculous! Of course there must be a way to rotate the film, just like I can rotate every portrait photo I’ve ever taken. How stupid would it be for there to be no way to rotate a video?”
And, of course, they’re right. It is ridiculous.
@dappled_leaves You certainly could rotate a video, it’s just in most cases it wouldn’t make sense, just like some pictures make no sense rotated. Take a portrait picture of yourself and then rotate it to landscape, it looks a bit dumb yes? I’d think this same though process would occur when shooting a video as it does when taking a picture. Maybe I’m giving people too much credit.
@El_Cadejo I didn’t realize you were all arguing that portrait videos are inherently dumb-looking. I don’t actually think they are. Obviously, any image that is posted at a 90 degree angle looks dumb. A lot of people have no sense of composition, and that’s too bad – but I’ve never seen an example of this among my friends. I’ve seen plenty of examples of people not rotating a video that would look just fine if it had been rotated.
