Does anyone here use a dash cam?

Have you found it useful, or just another gadget?
Thinking of getting one, just wondering if they are easy to use?
Are they very expensive?
What is the difference between a cheap one and an expensive one?
Has it helped you in anyway?

Just wondering a way to catch the complete stupidity ,I witness day to day while on the job, or maybe not depending on the reviews I get from this question.
There is no fucking way I’m going to drive for a living. The bastards just try to kill you every way they can. I average a major avoidance action once a mile on my way in to work. I’ve made the notes. It’s true. Six times on average on the way to my office. I’d go with a cheap one, a good one will give you too much detail. You’ll end up driving with a bottle in your hand. And it won’t be water.
What an interesting coincidence. I have been considering this for myself, and over just this weekend, too.
Every Thanksgiving I make a 1200-mile cross-country drive-in-a-day from Connecticut to Wisconsin to visit my daughter and my sister and her family, who all live there. After the holiday I make the return drive-in-a-day. And though the trip is normally uneventful, there are a few minutes each way, each time, that are just nuts. So I was looking myself, just yesterday, to answer the same question.
This was the best link I found, especially since it sent me to other well-presented opinions that said pretty much the same thing, and for the same camera. It doesn’t seem to me that $60 is a great risk, even if it’s not “the best”; it does seem like “the best for the money”. The advice to “know who you’re buying from” was also very good to see. Even sellers on Amazon may be dealing in cheap knock-offs of what is already a relatively inexpensive product.
So I think I’m going to take a chance on this. If I survive the trip next month, I’ll plan to give a review at that time.
No I don’t. If I did, I could sell the footage as a horror movie. People can be so fucking stupid.
@Dutchess_III you just wouldn’t believe the horrors I have witnessed driving for a living.
I can only imagine! What’s the worst/dumbest thing you’ve seen?
Oh the list is to long to even try, we can start with truckers themselves a moron last summer swerved an 83foot 2 trailer rig to miss a deer, ended up totalling the truck trailer and hurt himself pretty good, should have just taken out the deer.
Now for car drivers an idiot stopped in the middle of a fourlane freeway looking at an exit, I almost took that idiot out myself.
Came on a guy reading a book driving down the highway.
Seen people working on their lap tops, including the police.
Countless idiots texting and driving, cars truckers, and the cops.
Seen a few morons come down the on ramp to the freeway ,to stop turn around and drive back up the on ramp..
Saw another guy coming down the on ramp with a big pair of headphones on,head swaying back and forth, beating on the wheel witha pair drumsticks 2 drumsticks(what was he driving with? and the list goes on and on.
My daughter once was heading toward Wellington. There is an entrance / exit to the free way just before you get into town. The person in front of her exited. She kind of glanced at him to be sure he wasn’t going to change his mind. When she looked back, there was a guy in front of her stopped and backing up because he had missed his entrance. Yeah, she hit him. Totaled her car.
We should have sued him for all he was worth, but I didn’t know about the lawyers who work on contingency then.
Is there a statute of limitations on that kind of thing? It’s been more than 10 years.
@Dutchess_III Yeah I think ya missed that one, might be worth a call to an attorney just to be sure though.
I only use my GoPro when I go to a circuit. I don’t drive enough to use a dash-cam on the street. Despite living in a large city, I manage to organise my life so that I rarely drive in peak traffic. Doesn’t mean I haven’t seen some horrific driving though.
1. The overtake across double lines, approaching a blind crest, at 100 km/h.
2. The semi-trailer that approached a stationary car at a red light so fast, smoke came from all tyres as he braked, and the trailer kicked sideways into the next lane.
3. The lane change to get around a car turning across traffic, without checking for cars in the other lane. I can still hear the sound of the impact.
4. The “let’s stop the car to answer my phone”, in the bloody bus lane, with a bus not far behind, doing 80 km/h.

You’ll need a camera, and a mirror.
No personal attack intended here. Seriously, if I wanted to record people doing stupid things, then I’d be best off recording myself. But surely we are different people.
My husband growls and snarls at people doing “stupid” things…but he is just as likely to be the offender. He just doesn’t see it that way. I try to tell him to chill. We’ve all pulled out “in front” of someone before. We’re all guilty.
HEY! I will admit I do stupid things ,the difference is I try not to repeat the dumb thing over and over like most idiots on the road.
Right. To learn from our idiot mistakes. But that means taking ownership of them, and some people’s egos are too fragile for that.
There is no way I would use a dashcam.
Youtube is full of proof that if you use a dashcam you are bound to be involved in at least a near miss.
Dash cams don’t contribute to accidents. They’ll happen if they’re going to happen. The dash cam just records it.
^ Jokes gotten by everyone are almost always ones not worth telling.
Squee!
Those that don’t get it have their place.
Otherwise everyone would get it.
