Can you easily just take a small bite of chocolate and leave the rest for later/another day?

Asked by ZEPHYRA (21750points) October 29th, 2014

Any dessert or sweet snack for that matter. Do you have to polish the whole thing off or do you take a bite and leave the rest for another time? Can you control yourself?

Not if it is stored in my house. I just proved that today by polishing off the entire bag of mini bars I bought for Halloween.

ZEPHYRA's avatar

Yes, when they are there they have to go, I agree!

I am somehow managed to keep a chocolate bar in my fridge for close to a week now. I bought some amazing chocolate that’s 85% cocoa . If the store wasn’t so far away I’d have probably devoured it by now, but I’m trying to savor it.
This question made me get up and go eat some more though :P

Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope.

thorninmud's avatar

Oh yeah. I consumed enough chocolate back in my chocolatier days to last a lifetime. If I eat it nowadays, it’s out of professional curiosity, not craving. One bite’s all I need.

ZEPHYRA's avatar

@thorninmud how did you get over the craving? Did you just get sick of it?

I’m proud to say that I can – generally. I buy bags of dark chocolate Lindor truffles, and even when the bag is open I can limit myself to no more than one per day, instead of “one bag per day” as I might have done in my younger years. Halloween is a bit more dicey, because I buy bags of Mounds bars (which don’t all go at the door), so early November usually involves me combining my truffles and the leftover Mounds bars (which don’t always get limited to one-per-day, I confess) until they’re gone. (But I never buy more than two bags of Mounds. Except for when I get two bags of Mounds and two bags of NestlĂ© Crunch bars.)

Yes. In the last year I have often gotten myself a large bar with 15 squares, and have only a row of three. I can go five days on a single bar.

Blondesjon's avatar

This depends. How many drinks have I had?

rojo's avatar

Not if we are talking… Never mind, just no. If it is a piece I eat the whole piece, a candy-bar then the entire bar (who puts a half eaten candybar away anyway?) A resealable bag I can put up, after a few.

Chocolate is so overrated, my confectionary of choice would be red liquorice, in small doses you understand.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

I can. I’m not so good at depriving myself completely but I’m very capable of having a small amount and putting it back in the cupboard to eat later.

Cheesecake on the other hand….

Without shaking, breaking out into a sweat and pleading for mercy? Probably not. I can actually have chocolate in my house for days and not want to touch it but for some reason, I can’t just stop at one bite of a chocolate bar. I will say, just one bite. Then I will reason it is best to make it even across. Then I will reason that I can re-wrap it better if I eat half. Then I will reason that I’ve already done the damage and should just be over with it and eat it whole, besides the wrapping looks all messy. Sometimes I have been able to stop at half, but later that evening I will polish it off. So I just buy bite size bars to make it easier to say no.

I can do it with chocolate and most sweets. I have a harder time with pizza.

I prefer a fine quality chocolate in small doses. Harry and David truffles, one at a time. I prefer to be surprised that they are even better than I remember every time I eat them. I don’t want to have to find ‘the next step up’. I’m satisfied that they’re as good as it gets.

Now, Switzer’s green apple licorice? Open a bag, consume. Try to hold off on another bag as long as possible. Lately it’s been a 24 hour cycle.

Today I picked up 2 gallons of the most sublime caramels you’ve ever heard of. Literally ‘home made’ by a local woman. You pop one in your mouth and the sweet is followed by the taste of salted butter. Like candy sex, honestly. $20 the lot, eat your heart out.

ccrow's avatar

What? Leave it for later?? What does that even mean?!

Here2_4's avatar

@Pandora – Make it even across. I am laughing so hard! Thanks for bringing to me that joy.

Mostly I can do that, save for later. I get cravings, but it cycles on what. Sometimes it is chocolate, sometimes, ribs, sometimes lemonaid, whatever. I will want to stuff myself, then I’m good until the next craving.
Damn you Dutchess! You had to say cheesecake didn’t you? Now I have to go cruise the Sarah Lee. Who made those little bar shaped snack cheesecakes? Do they still sell those? I haven’t had any in maybe five years.

Pachy's avatar

Hahahaha! Impossible. Pachy likey candy waaaay too much.

thorninmud's avatar

@ZEPHYRA It’s not that I got sick of it, really. I can still appreciate it. But it was such a constant presence in my life that it lost all of its aura of specialness and indulgence. Also, whereas you probably associate it with pleasant moments, for me it evokes work.

I keep a box – when I can find them – of Pecan Delights in my basement freezer. The walking and defrosting process slows me down so I just have a few a day.

downtide's avatar

More often than not, I put the whole thing away “for later” without having any at all, then I forget about it completely. When I finally remember, I’ll say “Where’s that chocolate?” and my SO will say “Oh, I ate that a week ago.”

Dutchess_III's avatar

I’m seriously craving some candy right now!

janbb's avatar

Just opened some Halloween candy.

Dutchess_III's avatar

O! I forgot about that! Must go out and get some now! And I don’t get the crappy stuff. I get the good stuff!

Pandora's avatar

Not doing Halloween this year

Dutchess_III's avatar

But you can do the candy.

OpryLeigh's avatar

Yes. Chocolate doesn’t really do much for me!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Right now, Baby Ruth, Twix and Milky Way are having a partay in my stomach.

Katz22's avatar

Absolutely not, if it is chocolate, after the first bite I will eat it all until it is gone. That is why I only allow myself to have some chocolate once per week.
