Do you have any simple tricks for keeping rings on fingers?

Asked by Earthbound_Misfit (13177points) November 4th, 2014

The other day I lost a ring that has sentimental value. I’m incredibly lucky and my husband found it yesterday on the bathroom floor. It must have fallen off when I washed my hands.

I have quite a few rings that are too big for my fingers. Do you have any suggestions for keeping rings on your fingers without having them resized.

Get ring guards that make them fit more tightly.

Don’t wash your hands.

Get them fitted properly.
Having Frankfurter sausage fingers helps too!

Congratulations about losing the extra weight!

The metal snap in spacers work. So does a wrap or two of metal foil duct tape around the unseen side of the ring . The guards @janbb mentioned look a lot nicer.

Be careful every single time you wash your hands.

A few options.

Get them sized to fit your finger. Most jewelry stores size for free when you buy the ring there if you have it done at the time of purchase. I had a ring sized down at one of those fix it jewelry stores in a mall that I inherited and they did it for free. They probably came out ahead because they kept the platinum, but I was fine with that since it is such a mini amount.

Buy a thin simple band to wear in front of all of your rings.

Get ring guards as suggested above.

Make your own home-made ring guards with string.

Metal ring resizer

For several hundred dollars, you can purchase a very thin gold band to act as a guard, or for much less, one that is gold-filled. The problem there is having it fit well. If you have thin fingers but big knuckles the flexible metal ring resizer is a better solution.

I did buy one of those metal ring things but it came off and is lost and as I recall, it didn’t work terribly well. I think that might have been what people are calling a spacer here. I can’t remember how much it cost but it wasn’t a throwaway price. I’ll investigate different types.

Some of the rings have been inherited and some were a bit too big when bought/made for me and then yes, I also lost some weight. Plus I have tapered fingers so my knuckles aren’t prominent. My fingers progressively get thinner towards the end. I remember a jeweler commenting on it (negatively but in a nice way) when he looked at my hands after I commissioned him to make me a ring. It must make sizing a bit more challenging. Since I’m in a hot climate, I’m reluctant to have them all resized as my fingers are apt to be thinner in winter than summer plus it would cost a lot since I didn’t buy them all. I really don’t want to put weight on but I would like to be able to wear my pretty rings. I’m actually quite reluctant to wear some of them because I’d hate to lose them so much.

I’ll check into the string option as a first point to avoid them falling off and ring guards of various types as a longer term solution.

Appreciate the ideas. Even the not so useful ones :-)

I think possibly being thinner makes rings stay on better in that the knuckle is more likely to be more prominent. However, I do know people who have fingers the same as you describe who have tapering fingers where their knuckles at almost any weight don’t help with rings much.

Are you against just having a few simple bands in various sizes for different times of the year? There are negatives. If your rings don’t have a fairly consistent flat edge the second band will rub it a little. If you wear the same ring a lot it will wear on it a little.

That’s exactly how my hands are @JLeslie. My knuckles don’t hold rings on at all. I think checking out different ring guards and different types of ring guards for different seasons is the only way to go. I don’t wear my wedding rings because they fall off regularly and I’m paranoid I’ll lose them. Some rings I don’t care much about. I like them but they don’t have any emotional value. Others are very precious to me and I like to wear them all the time but at certain times of the year, it’s just too risky. @gailcalled‘s string idea isn’t a bad one because I can adapt it during different times of the year and string is less likely to be slippy. Bit of a first-world problem but I do like the rings I own and I would like to wear them without trepidation.

This seems almost too obvious to mention but have you tried switching the rings to various fingers, on each hand? Each of the three major fingers is a slightly different size and shape. I wear only one ring and do move it around as my weight goes either up or down.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

@gailcalled. Yes I have. One ring is very small and it only comfortably fits on my little finger but it’s a bit too big for that. Others I do move about a bit. My wedding rings look a bit odd on different fingers though. I’ve got three rings that connect together. In hindsight, and given the shape of my fingers, not such a brilliant idea and I can see why the jeweller groaned now. They’re bespoke and lovely but fall off. I could have them resized but unless I was sure that was going to work long term, I don’t want to risk damaging the rings either. Perhaps a finger transplant might be easier! Fingers with knuckles!

Probably cheaper to simply have a total knuckle replacement.

Maybe you should consider bracelets, pendants, necklaces, earings and even toe rings if you are in a warm climate.

I would be paranoid if I were you too.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

Well I have those things too @JLeslie, but I also have rings. I’ll check out ring guards as well as string. Thanks people.
