Why is there a little spot of blood when I wipe?

Asked by kimchi (1442points) November 5th, 2014

I was pooping (sorry, TMI) and when I wiped, I saw a little spot of blood on the toilet paper! I may have pushed too hard because I have been holding in my poop for quite a while…. Anyone know the exact cause?

It could be an anal fissure. They sometimes result when you have a particularly large, stiff bowel movement.

I gotta ask, why have you been holding your poop in for long periods?

Hemorrhoids can also cause a small amount of blood when they tear slightly.
Internal bleeding would be different, likely not even look the same as blood. Something like that would make stools thick, black, and sticky. Keep the area clean, so it can heal without infection. Witch hazel is a good cleanser for that. Unlike soap, it does not burn, or dry the skin. It is the main ingredient for Tucks hemorrhoids wipes and pads. If it happens often, see a doctor about it.

Hemorrhoids.

There maybe MENSA qualified people here, but unless they hold a medical license you best make an appointment and ask a real MD.

I didn’t hold it in – it wasn’t ready. Even if I tried to poop, it wouldn’t come out.

Ah, I see. To be fair you did say “I have been holding in my poop for quite a while….”

What you’ve described in your last post is called constipation. I recommend eating lots of fiber in the future to avoid further episodes.

This has happened to me on and off for years (I mean like 20 years). But it has been the most often in like the last 5. (I am 46).
I do need to see the doctor to be safe, but at least for me I am guessing it’s just fissues.
If it were anything else, I probably would have died by now :p

Im no physician, but one would ask bout the color of red the blood is. This determines if it is from the inside or the outside. Bright red blood is usually external, like from hemorroids, dark red is internal. He would also ask if there was blood in your stool. Usually bright blood is not a reason for alarm. Still, get the opinion of your physician and don’t take the word of some guy pecking on his iPad sitting on the john.

In general, if the blood you see on the paper is “bright red” (same color as when you get a cut elsewhere on your body), then it’s a surface issue such as an anal fissure or hemorrhoid, as mentioned above, and not much to worry about. I would not even attempt to see a doctor about that unless it persists for more than a day or two, or if it causes you any lasting discomfort.

For now, be gentle as you clean, and I would recommend moistened cleaning wipes (available at any pharmacy and at many supermarkets in the personal care aisle) in order to stay clean without excessive dry wiping.

Yes to what @CWOTUS said.
Drink lots of water, eat more fiber, fresh fruits and veggies and Magnesium citrate carbonated laxative works wonders too.
Inexpensive, fast acting and easy to swallow.
Look for it in 8 oz. bottles at your local drug store, it comes in lemon, grape and cherry flavors.
Only a couple dollars a bottle and results guaranteed in a few hours. lol
