Did CorningWare change your life? Say goodbye to its inventor.

Asked by elbanditoroso (33550points) November 7th, 2014

S. Donald Stookey has to be one of the unsung heroes of the 20th century. By accident, he invented what is now known as Corningware.

I use mine 4–5 times a week, never thinking about this guy who changed our lives.

He died earlier this week, but he deserves some accolades and recognition.

No. Never heard of it.

Unsung indeed. I often use stuff from my mom’s kitchen that is probably 50 years old.

Tonight I will raise a glass (not Corning, alas!) to the clever Mr Stookey.

Thanks for this, @elbanditoroso, I love this kind of stuff.

I use it all the time. I got rid of the Pfaltzgraff dinnerware that weighted a ton, broke when dropped and took up so much space in the cupboard. I replaced everything with Corningware. It was light, thin, stackable, and virtually indestructible and I never looked back. The stacking hook handle tea cups are genius. Mine are over 30 years old and I’ve never broken one. Fantastic product. It is so good they almost put themselves out of business. There is no reason to replace them. You can get complete sets at GoodWill for almost nothing. Grandkids cleaning out Grandma’s kitchen donate them because they got their own sets as wedding presents.
Note: As as experiment I did shoot a plate with a high speed .22 hollow point to see what would happen. The plate exploded into incredibly small pieces that flew for many meters. It was as if the plate was under pressure.

My parents chose Corning Ware Centura for their new home.

From a very early age I appreciated is irreducable featureless quality. All in an unadorned cool white. Good taste: Is it nature or nurture?

Later I was impressed with Corning Optic’s Serengheti copper sunglass lens. It did what was advertized: Inhancing contrast and improving vision in wet or cloudy conditions.

Most recently I appreciate Corning’s highly scratch resistant Gorilla Glass, found on the front and back of my iPhone. With a little care I can avoid using annoying and ugly smartphone cases.
