How do you tell erotica from porn?

I’m serious…what differentiates between the two? Is it more socially acceptable to purchase erotica? Would you be uncomfortable buying a book of erotica from Barnes & Noble? What about a bodice ripper romance?

The former is for middle-aged women and the latter is for middle-aged men.
I think maybe porn is about parts and erotica is more about the whole story, and/or porn is about pictures and erotica is about words.
I’m not sure, I don’t read erotica.
To be brief, I think porn objectifies sex, while erotica celebrates its function and meaning within society and relationships. I bought Anne Rice’s (under whatever her alias was for those books) erotica back in the early 90s, and I wasn’t embarrased to buy it at all. As far as the bodice rippers, not my thing.
i once heard pornography defined as “sexual content with no redeeming aristic value,” or something along those lines. erotica, i think, can be art with a lot of sex thrown in…
I think tinyfaery nailed it right on the head.
I’ve always wondered what “xx” was. We see plenty of things rated “x” or “xxx”.
If there’s meth, crack, coke, or heroin involved, it’s porn.
if it makes you feel cheap and dirty then it’s probably porn.
Erotica kinda gets you there and porn kinda pushes you over the edge…
In all seriousness, I see erotica as a form of art that utilizes human sexuality to achieve something beautiful, whereas pornography is a form of entertainment that utilizes human sexuality to achieve orgasms.
To quote someone: I can’t really define it, but I know it when I see it.
