Should I worry about Weevils in my apartment?

Asked by talljasperman (21919points) November 12th, 2014

My landlord said that they are harmless. They are worms with white and brown stripes. Should I worry? they stick to one corner of the apartment . They leave me alone and I leave them alone. They eat fabric and they attach to my socks if I take them off at night and if they fall on the floor.

Weevals Is this what they look like?

@chyna No, they are worms. I have lady bugs also maybe they are the larva form of the lady bug. I have no problem with ladybugs.

There are weevils that in your kitchen, but you’re complaining about them getting in your chips or cereal. So they’re eating an organic fiber, maybe the carpet or perhaps upholstery or drapery. They also like the glue on wallpaper and some of them like books.

They won’t hurt you, but if you have a nice wool hat, coat, etc, they’ll eat that.

Just gather them up and throw them outside.

You have an infestation and your landlord isn’t doing anything about it? Contact somebody. The property owner (if it’s not the landlord), the local housing board. Someone. Don’t just resign yourself to living with pests, “harmless” or not.

@Tropical_Willie Yes those are what I have.

@talljasperman Meal worms are fairly large and are used to feed pet lizards, etc. You purchase them at the pet store. It’s extremely unlikely that you have meal worms. In the wild they are called “darkling beetles” and they eat decaying vegetable matter (old leaves, rotten wood, etc). http://mealwormcare.org/

If along with the worms you also have little beetles they are “carpet beetles”. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=carpet+beetle+pictures

If you also have little moths fluttering about, you have clothing moths, which eat wool, flax or cotton. http://www.pestcontroldelivered.com/pages/clothes-moths-pictures-and-identification

There are quite a number of bugs that infest old books and old wood, and that also could be what you have. Your landlord is right. They won’t hurt YOU, but depending on what they’re eating, they could hurt your things or his property. It sounds like he doesn’t care. All these critters eat organic fiber of some sort.
