When you get many feet of snow, How do you get out?

For you folks who get uber snows and drifting. How do you get out of the house or get your car out when the snow is so wicked deep? It would seem unsafe to tunnel out. Then once you do get out, do the snowplows trap you out by plowing equally huge ice mountains at the end of your driveway?
