Do you know a love song with fabulous lyrics? Would like to hear from Fluther men especially.

Asked by Earthbound_Misfit (13177points) November 19th, 2014

I want to have one of these wallets made for my husband for Christmas. For those who don’t want to click the link, it’s a wallet and words are engraved all over the outside surface. I’d like to use the lyrics of either a poem or a love song.

My husband is romantic in a ‘guy’ way. He shows it through his practical actions rather than being romantically demonstrative. He never brings me flowers but he brings me a cup of tea every morning sort of thing. He has to carry this around with him and while he’s very self- assured, I wouldn’t want him to be put off because the message is too sooky. So I want to find a song with lyrics/words that say how much I love and appreciate him, but that aren’t so sweet they’re likely to make him want to vomit! I thought I’d ask the Fluther community for their suggestions. I know a lot of love songs, but they don’t necessarily have lyrics that will work for this.

I have some ideas and I’ll share them but I’d love to hear yours. I’d especially love to hear from Fluther men whether they’d like this or they’d hate it.

“every time you go away, you take a piece of me with you” can’t remember who did it but love it. Easily you tubeable. What a gorgeous idea you have there.

The Goo Goo Dolls Iris

Groovy kind of love

Leonardo’s Bride, Even when I’m sleeping.

Any thoughts on these, gratefully received.

Thank you @trailsillustrated. I hope he thinks so! I know that song… that’s the Paul Young song. It’s a nice one.

Do you know if he is in the market for a new wallet? I hate to potentially rain on your parade, but I absolutely love my wallet – if someone gave me one as a gift, even if it’s someone I love dearly, I think I’d still prefer my current one…I like it that much.

I bought him the one he has and uses. He’s had it for a long time. It’s pretty worn now. I do take your point though and I will suss out whether he’s open to replacing it. I bought him a watch (the first present I ever bought him). It wasn’t terribly expensive and it needs repairing but he wants to get it repaired and doesn’t want a new one.

@Earthbound_Misfit I love the songs you’ve chosen. It’s just a beautiful present. He will love it!

The songs you’ve chosen are great. My personal favourite is Ghost Love Score. It’s a bit left-field, but so is nearly all the music I like.

Men aren’t big on love songs. Your question embarrassed me. I’m sitting here blank, and the closest I can come to a love song is “Piece of my heart” How about “The 12th of Never”? Enough mush in that one to feed a good sized orphanage.

You do realize that any man who pulls a thing like that out of his pocket in front of male witnesses will be mercilessly taunted and picked on.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

:-) @stanleybmanly. How did it embarrass you? Do you really think people would taunt him for having something that shows his wife loves him? Serious question. I think he’s a big enough man to deal with that if it happened, but I wouldn’t want him to be teased. So if other guys think carrying a wallet with words that signify you’re loved engraved on it would be embarrassing, please speak up. I don’t think like a guy so I’ll listen. That’s why I’m asking here. Thank you @stanleybmanly, sweet songs too.

Thank you @Adirondackwannabe, that’s a beautiful song but a bit sad. It’s about a couple who are, as the song says ‘tearing each other apart’.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Earthbound_Misfit Yes that’s true, but I like to think of it as a reminder not to take things for granted and to work at relationships. Or what can happen if we don’t.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

Well yes. But if he’s going to carry it around with him I’d rather the words said ‘you’re amazing and I love you to bits’ rather than ‘we’re tearing each other to bits’. I do like that song though. It’s one of my favourite Eagles songs.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

Thank you @FireMadeFlesh for your suggestion. I’ll listen to it properly tomorrow when I’m more awake.

stanleybmanly's avatar

He’s going to be teased about it. You can depend on it. It’s not going to destroy him or ruin his life. Back when I bought a motorcycle my wife gave me a bag (purse) and it was a revelation. I had no idea how handy those things are. It was in the early 70s before backpacks were common and that purse was with me everywhere. I reared my children from it. Band aids, chapsticks, pocket knife, my pie and tobacco . No more bulging wallet in my back pocket. Ten years later, when the purse finally wore out, I ran right out and bought a great Coach bag that I still use today. It sits under the front seat in whatever vehicle I’m driving. I rarely ride the motorcycle any more. When people compliment me on my “nice bag”, I always correct them with “it’s a purse.” I plan on being buried with it

It’s a really sweet gift, so please don’t take this as criticism, maybe just a tweak.

Is there a poem or song that he feels is his own? A wallet is pretty personal and I would think the conversation when he whips it out is going to go something like

“New wallet, what’s that say? Can I see it?”

<Mr. Misfit hands his wallet over>

And you can’t fight the tears that ain’t coming?? Wha?”

“It’s a love song, it was a gift from my wife…”

“So, that’s your song?”

“Well, sort of”

The gift will already remind him of you, maybe the words could be something important to him or something he’d wear on a t-shirt?

funkdaddy's avatar

Rereading my answer above, it comes across a lot more critical than I meant (and too late to edit). The gift is great because you’ve put thought into it, and you know your husband obviously a lot better than I do. Whatever you decide on, he will love, I would just suggest making the customized portion something he’s proud of.

My wife gave me this wallet a while back. It looks almost exactly like a table my dad built when I was young and we didn’t have money for a kitchen table. He hated it because he saw all the imperfections, but I always liked it and was sad when we got something “nicer”.

I’ve carried the wallet for years now, so I don’t notice it every time, but occasionally when I get my wallet out, or someone asks to see it, I think of my dad, that table, the first house we had after living in a trailer for a while, and how things don’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. It makes me thankful for whatever money is in there.

It’s personal and when it wears out I’ll still keep it.

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again

Of course

But also, I might recommend a couple of Josh Ritter songs, Good Man (a love song) or Bone of Song (about the power of words carved on an object – lyrics).

I think Stars by Sixx AM might have some lyrics of interest:

“Do you wanna see heaven tonight
underneath those lights,
It would look so beautiful.
Do you wanna see the stars before they fall?
See the stars before they fall.

Do you wanna be my love tonight
and for all my life
It could be so wonderful.
Do you wanna see the stars before they fall?
See the stars before they fall.”

“In my life, I love you more”

And “The first time ever I saw your face, I felt the sun rise in the sky.”

OpryLeigh's avatar

One of my favourite lyrics from a love song is “with you there’s a heaven so earth ain’t so bad” from Weekend in New England by Barry Manilow. Not sure how your husband would feel about having Barry Manilow lyrics on his wallet though!!

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

:-) @OpryLeigh, I might have to lie about who wrote the lyrics! Although Manilow is a great lyricist I think. Just rather maligned. That’s a beautiful line. I also love that Beatles song @janbb and Flack’s The first time ever I saw your face is a phenomenal love song.

@stanleybmanly, I love your story about the purse. So touching and very manly I have to say.

@funkdaddy, I don’t think you’re being critical at all. I think your point is a really good one. I thought of using the lyrics to songs we chose at our wedding, but I don’t know if they work so well. He isn’t a ‘this is my favourite song’ type of man. I’ve asked him in the past and he usually grimaces because he can never think of just one song he loves. I’ll put links here and to a song I think says it all (except I’d have to get them to write ‘boy’ instead of ‘girl’ in two places. What an incredibly thoughtful gift from your wife. I love that she did that. How did she know what the table looked like? Did you point something out at some point?

We (quite pathetically and ineptly) danced to “The Look of Love” by Dusty Springfield:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tf1d65OHYXo and “Open Arms”: by Journey:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lLmYLw0WRI. The words to neither song feel right when printed on a wallet though as much as they were perfect for the moment and we do both love these songs and they bring back so many memories of our ‘dancing lessons’.

I’m thinking about this one sung by David Gray.

@dappled_leaves, @Winter_Pariah and @ZEPHYRA, I’m going to listen to these songs when I get home later. Thank you so much everyone for your thoughts on this. I’m loving the stories apart from the great suggestions. I should say this is a man who got quite upset with me when we first got together because I bought him a funny birthday card instead of a romantic one. He always buys me very soppy cards (I’m not a card person but I do have a weird sense of humour). He was most put out.

Be Mine lyrics.

From the very first moment I saw you
That’s when I knew
All the dreams I held in my heart
Had suddenly come true

Knock me over stone cold sober
Not a think I could say or do
‘Cause baby when I’m walking with you now
My eyes are so wide

Like you reached right into my head
And turned on the light inside
Turning on the light
Inside my mind hey

Come on baby its all right
Sunday, Monday day or night
Written blue on white its plain to see
Be mine, be mine

Rainy shiny night or day
Whats the difference anyway
Honey till your heart belongs to me

If I had some influence girl
With the powers that be
I’d have them fire that arrow at you
Like they fired it right at me

And maybe when your heart
And soul are burning you might see
That every time I’m talking with you
Its always over too soon

That everyday feels so incomplete
Till you walk into the room
Say the word now girl
I’ll jump that moon hey

Come on baby its okay
Rainy shiny night or day
Theres nothing in the way now
Don’t you see
Be mine, be mine

Winter summer day or night
Centigrade of Fahrenheit
Baby till your heart belongs to me
Be mine, be mine

Thursday, Friday short or long
When you got a love so strong
How can it be wrong now mercy me
Be mine, be mine

Jumpin’ Jesus holy cow
What’s the difference anyhow
Baby till your heart belongs to me

Be mine, be mine
Be mine, be mine
Be mine, be mine

I think the wallet is a great idea. I didn’t know you could do that. I’m not sure about song lyrics, they don’t always look so good written down unless they are from a song that has a special meaning to you both.

My suggestion would be for some lines of romantic poetry, Rumi or Octavio Paz or Pablo Neruda

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way

than this: where I does not exist, nor you,
so close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.

Pablo Neruda

@stanleybmanly “Men aren’t big on love songs”. Speak for yourself.

Anyway, I have many, though I think my favorite is ‘Harbor’, by Vienna Teng. The whole thing is gorgeous but specifically the chorus:

Sail your sea
Meet your storm
All I want is to be your harbor
The light in me
Will guide you home
All I want is to be your harbor

Newer from her, and a bit more upbeat, is ‘Never look away’:

Some nights we open up the flood
And some nights we are lost
And some nights we’re choking on the words
But some we light on fire

If you’re out there in the cold…

I want your warm bright eyes
To come back to me
And hold on to me
You know I won’t lie
I will never look away

Vanessa Carlton also has a ton, though hers tend to be a little sad. Good one liners, though.

‘Who’s to say’:

Stand up boy, I shine so bright when you’re around

‘Ordinary Day’:

“Just a boy,
Just an ordinary boy.
But he was looking to the sky.”

‘Hands On Me’:

We’d cross the deepest oceans
Cargo across the sea
And if you don’t believe me
Just put your hands on me

‘Come Undone’:

The only one I come undone for is you

Barellies also has many good ones, though hers are likewise melancholy a lot. Lovely lyrics, though.

‘City’

In these deep city lights
Girl could get lost tonight
I’m finding every reason to be gone
There’s nothing here to hold on to
Could i hold on to you?

The Light:

You are the air in my breath filling up my love soaked lungs
Such a beautiful mess intertwined and overrun
Nothing better than this, oh, and then the storm can come
You feel just like the sun
Just like the sun

And I can think of a lot more, but I’ll leave it there for now.

Oh, and I somehow missed this gem from Barellies, ‘I choose you’

My whole heart
Will be yours forever
This is a beautiful start
To a lifelong love letter

Tell the world that we finally got it all right
I choose you
I will become yours and you will become mine
I choose you
