Can a 15 year old girl refuse to have an abortion?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47126points) November 20th, 2014

There is some spoof on fb that says supposedly a 15 year old girl was held against her will at an abortion clinic when she changed her mind about having the abortion. I think it’s total fabrication.

Anyway, the question came up as to whether a 15 year old can legally decide not to have an abortion, when her parents want her to.

If it came from a site like Life News, you can bet your last dollar that it’s bullshit. And yes, minor or not, no one can force one to have an abortion.

Oh, I know.

Got to side with @Darth_Algar on this one sounds like total BS.

But that wasn’t the question. That’s just what prompted me to ask “Can a 15 year old be forced to get an abortion?” That’s the question.

I doubt it, she could be pressured quite a bit by relatives and friends , but actually forced I don’t think so, maybe unless some Doctor said if she went through with it good chances it could kill her, maybe then and just maybe.

Abortion doesn’t mean there is a “good chance” the woman will die.

@Dutchess_III I believe he meant if she went through with the pregnancy, not the abortion.

Generally, a minor cannot be forced into getting an abortion unless her life or health is at risk due to the pregnancy and an abortion is medically necessary.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@Dutchess_III that isn’t what I meant I mean, if her health or life were in great jeopardy seeing the pregnancy to term, then and maybe then the Doctor could force an abortion.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

And thank you @livelaughlove21 that is exactly what I meant.

15 year olds can’t be forced to have abortions, but I can bet that if someone around her wants it bad enough, they can guilt-trip, manipulate, threaten, and in all other ways mentally force her to have an abortion.

I was in that position as a 19 year old but it was my grandmother who told me to do what was right for me and me alone. I have a gorgeous 23 year old son because I made a decision for myself.

Maybe not in this nation, life is cheap, and a 15 year old will be treated as an adult if there is a buck or a Godzilla sized crime involved.

I make it a point to never believe anything I see on Facebook.

It isn’t a spoof. It happened. link

It is illegal to force.

zenvelo's avatar

So it didn’t happen, the mother just tried to make it happen.

No, you can’t legally force someone.

I finally got that figured out @grac3alot. The Life News (which is a pro life site) took that incident and built that whole BS scenario around the fact that the cops were called. But they made it sound like the clinic was holding her against her will, trying to force her to have an abortion. The original happened in Ohio, the make believe story happened in NY.

OHHHHH, I f******** hate pro-life, just a whole lot of guys, wanting women not the have their own choices, they r total BS! Y’know, I was once at this place, and there were a whole lot of pro life guys (no girls), saying ”WOMEN SHOULDN’T ABORT, IT IS WRONG!” and all that BS, then some guy goes ”Oi, You can’t speak for women, it’s their right, you’re not the one who has to give birth to the kid!”, and everyone who was there, was like ”YEAH WOOOOO!”, Yeah…

BTW, this is my opinion

@grac3alot “It isn’t a spoof. It happened. link”

The story in that link does not at all corroborate the story in the link @Dutchess_III posted. In fact it isn’t even in the same state.

grac3alot's avatar

When I say it happened, I mean the event took place only it wasn’t as lifenews describes it. It is how the actual news link describes it. It was in Ohio, and the clinic didn’t try to force her to abort, the mother did.

Lifenews twisted the story.
