Different Types of Addiction Treatments?

Asked by broberst (10points) November 21st, 2014

Hi all, a friend of mine has an alcohol addiction. She has just recently admitted that she has a problem and has asked for my help finding some different resources regarding treatment and therapy, but I am not that knowledgeable on the topic. I understand that each person’s journey will be different, especially concerning what works or doesn’t, which varies between each individual. Of course I have heard about AlAnon, but I would like to give my friend all of the options that I can.

What are some alternative types of addiction treatments, how are they different from AA, and what are some pros/cons of that treatment?

If she’s in the US most Public Health Departments have a counselor for working with people with substance abuse problems. Probably through your county offices. It’s confidential too.

Welcome to Fluther and thanks for asking these questions.

Most recovery models are abstinence based models. There are two general stages to the recovery:

1. Detoxification and stabilization of craving.
2. Long term work on psychological issues to maintain abstinence and avoid recurrence.

In addition to AA and AA alternatives (such as Rational Recovery and Secular Organization for Sobriety aka SOS), there are a few methods such as the Schick-Shadel Hospital behavior modification method.

Most treatment programs are based on the AA model. A 30 day treatment is usually focused on one week of detox and physical stability, two weeks of counseling and therapy to provide introspection about the patient’s particular issues and causes, and then a week of transitional planning for sober living, That is combined with an introduction to AA as a means of support for long term sobriety.

Good Luck to your friend!

How is your friend doing? The first time I quit years back, I found a forum called My Way Out that has lots of useful informative resources for the recovering alcoholic and a very fun and welcoming social community there who will provide answers and support and best part it is on 24/7 My favorite part was the “blog” section where members can start their own thread and write their thoughts and experiences. I occasionally go back and read what I wrote to remind myself of the pain I caused the others in my life.

There are various types of addiction treatment
Inpatient Care – Addict lives in a residential rehab facility for a period of 30–45 days.
Outpatient Care – Addict drives to rehab center three or four nights a week and completes X amount of sessions.
AA and NA meetings – Not considered treatment. These are sessions that should be attended post treatment to keep addicts on the road to recovery.

Most insurances will cover the entire cost of their stay if your friend is seeking rehabilitation.
Rehabilitation will start with the detox phase which is the worst part – it’s hell. It usually lasts three or four days. Afterwards, addicts begin classes such as relapse prevention, mindfulness, repairing relationships, etc. Here are a few of the best treatment centers out there if you’re interested in receiving a free assessment for your friend. They will work with their insurance provider and help make travel arrangements.
