Are there good alternatives to MeetUp?

I am a member of a social activity group that is looking to recruit new members. It would seem that setting up a MeetUp group would be a good way to publicize our group. However, MeetUp costs $$, and we would prefer to find free alternatives first.
We can post announcements in our local paper, and there’s Craigslist. Anything else?

Anywhere there’s a bulletin board like the library, maybe grocery stores.
Make a group or event post on FB.
Depends what sort of group it is. You’d want to look for promotion opportunities in places that are related to the thing your group has in common. Can you tell us more about it?
@dappled_leaves Hi, I purposely left out what kind of group it is, because I wanted to make this a generic discussion applicable to different groups. Any group will face a dwindling membership if they don’t attract new members. Turns out I belong to several different groups, and I was hoping for a variety of suggestions. As you said, what would be most effective depends on what sort of group each one is. I was thinking that I would then apply what might be the most appropriate for each group.
Any more suggestions, anyone? I just remembered that there’s also Yahoo Groups and Ning. Does anyone still use these?
