Now that Thanksgiving is over have you sworn never to do X again on Thanksgiving?

Asked by JLeslie (65746points) November 29th, 2014 from iPhone

I ate at my MIL’s and you might know from other Q’s that I felt she was making too much food and doing too much work.

She says she will never put out finger foods again for people as they arrive (I hope she doesn’t) and not make as many dishes for dinner either. We’ll see.

Supposedly, for Christmas this year she agreed with me to make about half of what she usually does. Again, we’ll see.

It doesn’t have to be food preparation, maybe you have decided not to travel far again on Thanksgiving, or not to go to your Inlaws.

Same pledge every year: Next year I’m not going to eat so much.

Growing up, my family was the one that traveled to visit all the other relatives. Since I began a family of my own, I refuse to leave the house on holidays.

I am the cook in our family. I guess I am like your MIL since I do it all myself. my two married children come over with our three grandchildren. Every year I say I won’t make so many side dishes and keep it simply. I say the same thing every year so who knows if I will listen to my own advice.

I even set up the table myself and decorate. I guess when I die, it all goes with me. :)

…not to make as many side dishes (we could use about three less).

…not to serve soup and pasta (soup alone would have been fine).

I’m going to try not to spend it alone. I’m going to try to spend it with family while they’re around.

Nope. I have had extremely low stress holidays ever since I divorced 12 years ago now. haha
Fun. simple, just go with the flow.

I had a great Thanksgiving—much more relaxed than in years past, because I made two dishes the day before. I have resolved to do that from now on (at least while I am cooking).

No, I had a very good Thanksgiving and didn’t even overindulge that much. It was a great holiday.

I will never ignore Thanksgiving again. This Thanksgiving was the first time I knew that my parents know and care about Thanksgiving too.

Maybe not next year, maybe not the year after that, but soon I’ll stop participating in Thanksgiving. And all other holidays for that matter.

I didn’t do it, but my SO has sworn not to put the potatoes in the blender to make mashed potatoes. They were still super tasty though, so I’m not going to complain.

@muppetish – Two Thanksgivings ago, I used a stick blender for the mashed potatoes, and it changed the consistency so much. They were still delicious, but the whipping process removed the fluffiness. I used a ricer to hand-smash them this time, and they came out much better.
