Can you help me name this thriller writer?

Asked by marinelife (62485points) December 2nd, 2014

I read about four or five books by a very good thriller writer whose name I can’t remember. One or maybe two of them involved a government operative (woman) who worked for an agency like the NSA (but possibly fictional). One involved a submarine and the polar ice cap. That’s all I can remember.

Tell me it’s not Dan Brown.

Is it Bart Davis?

marinelife's avatar

No and no. @dappled_leaves That’s why I first picked up one of his books. I confused him with Dan Brown.

dappled_leaves's avatar

Hmm. Could it be James Rollins or perhaps someone like David Baldacci?

janbb's avatar

Not Tom Clancy, I suppose?

dappled_leaves's avatar

@janbb Does he ever write from anyone’s POV but Ryan’s?

janbb's avatar

Don’t know – that was just a wild guess. The first guess was researched.

Sorry, no.

Sorry, I’m tapped.

Is one of the books on this list? You didn’t happen to note whether the author was male or female, did you?

marinelife's avatar

@CWOTUS Good lead, but no go. Sorry, I thought I did say he was male.

Okay, so what other clues can you give us? Approximate age of the books or when you read them? Any other characters or plot turns that you can recall? Particular dialog? Character name/s? Settings for the novels? (Such as “Cold War” or “fantasy” or “future”.)

Got it. It is James Rollins.

Hey, that was one of my suggestions!

I was thinking of Kay Scarpetta and her niece. The niece was special ops. The early books seemed pretty good, then they went a little to fantastical for my taste.

marinelife's avatar

@ibstubro I am the same way. I loved the early books, but then she went off the rails.

I buy all my books second-hand, @marinelife, and apparently I had read a couple of the older Scarpetta novels and maybe a mid-series. Then I hit a new release and had to stop myself from throwing the book against the wall when I finished it.

My reaction to crappy books. I’ve never actually done it – there is just too much breakable stuff in my home. Ah, that one day I’ll get to finish a crappy book in the desert or at the beach and be able to fling it without thought!

Is this Patricia Cornwell? Who’s the author we discuss?

marinelife's avatar

@ibstubro Yes, Patricia Cornwell.
