Men: If it were up to you, what type of clothes would you like to see women wear?

Asked by jca (36062points) December 15th, 2014

The other day, I was helping my co-workers set up at a fancy hotel for our annual, large holiday party for several hundred guests. I was chatting with a male co-worker who is about 60. I told him from my years of attending this and other fancy parties, I realize that nobody cares about your handbag and nobody cares what you wear on your feet. We take pains to choose a fancy little handbag, and we take pains to pick fancy shoes that match our outfits, and yet nobody looks at either. When we’re on the dance floor and it’s dark, nobody is looking at your feet. Most of us who have been around know by now to bring a regular bag, also, to take “giveaways” home in, too. Your handbag and your bag sit under the chair and nobody looks at any of it.

I told him that I heard on a news show that the majority of women dress for other women, not for men. (I don’t know the details of this so please don’t get upset if this piece of fluff is something you don’t agree with. At this point it’s rhetorical). He agreed, and said his wife also concerns herself with her manicure and men don’t care about that, either. I asked him what would men like to see women wear and he said “tight.”

I realize this is just one man’s opinion. Men, if you had your choice, what type of clothes would you like to see women wear?

As long as she is comfortable in them,it makes no difference to me.

This is a tough one.

I love a curvaceous woman in tight clothes, but if she doesn’t want to be looked at, then we have a problem. As a man, it is incredibly hard not to look for at least a few seconds when there’s cleavage right in front of my face. If she is ok with those glances, then by all means, where the sexy stuff. If she doesn’t want that, I’d prefer she wear something more conservative.

Leotard, tutu, top hat & good quality hiking boots.

If it were up to men, Women would wear either no clothes at all, or burkas.

See quote above. Clothing is not something men care about.

Let’s try this…

What color should stamp-collectors’ toothbrushes be? No matter how hard you try, you’re unlikely to have an opinion on it.

The best I can say is that clothing that appears uncomfortable for anyone (high heels, for example) is upsetting.

@ragingloli – you’re glib, but wrong.

@jca – I think that most women look great in a button-down oxford shirt and slacks. I’m not a big fan of pullover tops or t-shirts.

It puts me off when anyone, man or woman, has clearly sacrificed functionality for the sake of appearance, or has otherwise gone to extraordinary lengths in expense, time or discomfort to achieve some look. The result may be visually pleasing, but that’s overshadowed by the feeling that this person has priorities that I find unattractive.

Long peasant dresses, Can’t resist ‘em.

I like clothes that increase a woman’s poise and self-esteem. I find confident women very sexy and attractive, and their clothing becomes secondary.

My favorite are sun dresses. Light flowing, classy, fun, bright. Not for a christmas party of course.

I’ve found many men have a shoe and foot fetish, plus nail fetish. So, I try!

+1 I love to see women in heels, but slender heels, not the blocky type. Heels work with jeans, slacks, and dresses/skirts. Oh…and sometimes undies!

Other than @ucme ‘s response, I can remember appreciating women dressed in all the suggestions listed above.

Seeing a women dressed in the current fashion, if the fashion is not becoming to her body shape, is a big turn-off.

The best of all are those rare women with a strong individual sense of style who dress to express their personality and to hell with what people think. They look better than anything I could imagine.

@bossob You musta led a very sheltered life :D

lol Apparently so. But I used to have a liking for a woman who wore a union suit that had most of the buttons missing on the access flap. Who’d a thunk a woman could be sexy in a union suit?!

ucme's avatar

Haha, access flap…“i’m going in darlin, I may be gone some time”

What this thread proves is there is no universal answer to the question ‘what do men like’? Thank goodness.

They should dress in what makes them feel comfortable. If that’s a pair of sweat pants so be it. If someone is comfortable they’ll generally appear attractive. Female dress is almost always in the extremes for whatever reason. I do wish they would stop wearing pantsuits though. That shit looks so ugly, uncomfortable and uptight. I find sun dresses extremely attractive on women as well as more old school long dresses.

Appropriate for the situation.

It depends on which me is doing the appraising, my libido or me.

I suppose I like wide legged slacks, a button down shirt (give or take a tie), and suspenders. I also like cover-alls (as in those farm looking blue things). I like long skirts that reach the feet. I’m an artist and design clothing as part of character designs, so I could say a cool pair of pants, but that conveys little. I think the list of attire that I find unappealing is easier to consider, and it’s a much shorter list.

I don’t have any judgments as to how they should dress. I can only list a few that I find appealing.

If it were up to me, utter and total freedom to dress (or not dress) any way they wanted, and likewise reap the rewards and suffer the consequences for doing so. So if you dress in a manner that some consider to be that of a tramp, you have to get over the fact that many think and can speak openly that you dress like a tramp, but you get more attention from those who often follow their libidos, and you get to express yourself the way you want, and whatever other rewards you reap. Same old thing with me, freedom to decide and freedom for others to subjectively evaluate you and your decision, up to and including hiring and firing at a private company.

Oh, and I like glasses :)
