Arrgghh! What can I get my staff for Christmas?

Asked by syz (36034points) December 16th, 2014

I always get a small gift for the hospital staff (veterinary emergency) for Christmas, hopefully something functional. There are 47 of them, so it adds up quickly – I have to budget around $20. I’ve given everyone a personal stethoscope, individual bandage scissors, a nice thermos. This year I thought I had found a great option, a kitty face watch, but after ordering them JCP let me know that they’re out of stock (and also on all of the various permutations).

Now it’s getting down to the wire and I’m out of ideas. (I’ve considered a gift card – it’s an option, but for small amounts, a gift card just seems to emphasize that it’s a pittance.) Help!

A book. Always a good idea. Support your local bookshop and get the staff there to help you choose

A nice little pen light?
That is something that they could use on or off the job.

In these situations, I tend to give a gourmet gift basket for the whole group or bake some cookies and bring them in.

If you want to buy individual gifts and live in an area that gets icy, how about yaktrax?

Either a good metal water bottle, or a go-cup, a reusable container that is usable by anyone and is not at all size-ist, sexist, age-ist, And, you can get them in your budget.

Is it something you are going to order from a company with your office logo on it?

If not, you can do a basket that you make yourself, for each one. It would be a lot of work to make 47, but you can buy baskets on sale at a craft store or just put the stuff in gift bags. You can buy gourmet goodies at a store like Trader Joe’s or whatever is in your area. Maybe some nice Italian sparkling soda, some fancy cookies, candy, whatever. You can enlist the help of a staffer to put the stuff together. I do that kind of thing for the receptionists in our office (from me, personally, not from the job).

You can also order something from Amazon, free 2 day shipping if you have Prime, or just pay for shipping. I love Amazon for searching for items that I want, by theme.

I want the duck cookies.

How about note pads with animals on them? I got some cute ones for one of my coworkers. Try Amazon.

@jca had the same idea I was about to say. Baskets are expensive and the recipients won’t actually use them. So I’d go for little gift bags instead. An arts and crafts store might sell them in a pack all together.

Then you can fill each of them with cute little snacks and consumables. In my area, they have World Market, which is basically a low-cost version of Pier 1 imports with food. Places like Whole Foods and Trader Joes also have lots of cute giftable snacks.

You could get things like individually wrapped fancy chocolates, little gift tins of coffee or tea, interesting flavors of spice blends to cook with, or anything they have in stocking-stuffer size. The one near my house has miniature jars of preserves, different flavors of gourmet popcorn, and basically anything else you could ever want to eat.

I bet a nice coffee thermos would also be appreciated. Everyone I work with is tired all the time and drinks tons of coffee.

I agree with @ragingloli: even a modest raise would be appreciated more than some trinket.

Short break cookies or a $20 Christmas bonus.

Update: I found some basic Timex watches on Amazon that I’ve ordered. It’s not as unique, but it’s something that they use in their job every day, something that they now wont have to buy for themselves. (A $20 raise spread out over a year is less than a $0.01 raise.)

@syz Edit shortbread cookies…or a $20 Christmas bonus. You can also invite them to a company buffet. Edit : Timex watches will have to do.

a $20 gift card to a local place with a big variety. Maybe a Target, Walmart or in your case a medical supply store. I know when I worked (before I retired) all my co workers liked getting gift cards to choose what we wanted or needed ourselves.

Timex is an ‘in’ brand right now @syz. My daughter asked for (a quite expensive) one for her birthday so it might go down better than you think. Great idea.

(I should mention that we also have an annual Christmas party and I cook Christmas dinner for all three shifts on Christmas Day.)
