Where can I buy a table top radio, with remote, that receives HD, AM and FM bands?

Asked by LuckyGuy (43880points) December 18th, 2014

It is time to replace the 20+ year old fossil radio that has been sitting on top of my refrigerator for decades. I have been looking around and see the Insignia NS-HDRAD for about $50 at Best Buy, but it has terrible reviews, does not have a remote, and does not receive AM. Not acceptable.
Surely there is something better for around $120 or less. I only find car radios and home theater tuners. I want the radio to work without need for an internet connection. Is that too much to ask?

Does anyone have suggestions?

I was recently shopping for a new radio, too, and did some research, but nowhere could I find one with the kind of high-end features you want for less than hundreds. This Bose is a wonderful radio, but unfortunately, costs 3X. This if one of the lists I was looking at.

Thanks! I can’t believe I am asking for so much. I don’t need MP3, or iphone, ipod, or wifi or streaming or speakers to 22 kHz… I just want a radio that gets the HD channels as well as AM and FM.
The Insignia was close except (apparently) it is a piece of junk and does not have AM.

Surely someone out there sells this. If not, maybe I should!

If I stumble onto anything, I’ll let you know.

Thanks! I want to be able to listen to, for example: NPR 91.5 HD 2, HD 3. This must exist somewhere.

The sticking point might be the HD channels (as well as the rremote). Did the radio you’re replacing have these two features?

The closest thing might be in the realm of vintage replicas like the Crosley CR 31 WA or similar. ($50)

The Crosley company does some very nice replicas of others along the same idea and might have a different model with all the features you’re looking for if you give them a call or check their website.

The radio I am replacing does not have HD. It was built way before HD was invented. It does have a remote though. I’ll check out Crosley.

@LuckyGuy I was given an Emerson radio CD with remote and a cassette player. It was $40 from K-Mart.

Is streaming Internet a possibility instead of HD radio?

And for non-HD radios have you looked at the Sangean WR-12 or Sangean WR-2?

@Adirondackwannabe Does the Emerson pick up the FM HD channels as well as standard fM and AM? For example: 91.5 FM and 91.5 HD 1, and 91.5 HD 2, sometimes written as 91.5–1 and 91.5–2.

@jaytkay I would prefer to not use streaming. I want to pick the signal up out of the air – like radio was intended. ;-)

To avoid confusion here is a site that lists the radio stations for your area.

Local HD Radio stations

Those stations are in addition to the usual AM and FM stations that we have been able to pick up for decades.

I want a radio that will pick up all types. (The HD is not to be confused with the High Def moniker. It is different channels on the same main frequency.)

I looked at www.hdradio.com but did not find what you are looking for or anything close.

Sony XDR-S10HDiP HD Radio was made about 7 years ago, my daughter has one. They are no longer made. :(

@Tropical_Willie Thanks. I looked there too and saw the one table top radio. But, incredibly, it did not get AM.
I just looked at the Sony radio you mentioned and see it had a dock for iPod. I don’t want that kind of feature because, let’s face it, it will be out of date with the next phone update. Also, I don’t have an iAnything.

I’m glad you looked . You can see I am not making it up. There is a need.
