How do you feel about eating crawdads?

Asked by Aster (20028points) December 26th, 2014

I think of crawdads as ugly shelled creatures living in murky waters of streams. People suck the juice out of the heads. One night at a party outdoors I was starving and I admit to peeling away the shell and eating them and they were very good but that was thirty five years ago. Now they seem disgusting to me.

I like crawdads and crabs and lobsters as animals first. Never ate a crawdad, seems like a lot of work for little reward. I do remember having fun playing with them in a creek as a kid, trying to catch them for fun in a little net, but always released them. Eating crawdads seems like those that hunt dove and quail, takes dozens of them to make a meal, why bother?

@Coloma they bother because it costs nothing.

They are tasty enough, but too much work for the pleasure. I will eat them if offered or if an extra on a platter, but won’t order them alone.

I love crab and lobster (Atlantic lobster); had my traditional fresh Dungeness crab on Christmas Eve!

I grew up in New Orleans, so eating crawfish was de rigeur. It’s best done as a giant boil, with friends, family, and beer. I never did suck the heads, though.

I did have a lobster burrito recently, OMG…amazing.

I love them.
However I admit I tried sucking the heads and it did nothing for me, so I don’t do that.
You can buy the tail meat only, frozen at Walmart.

I like them but I just eat the tails like shrimp. No head sucking for me.

I like them, but they disgust my wife.

or maybe it’s me.

Head sucking…lol, boy could we all run with that.
Never mind me, had like 4 shots of expresso this morning, my already zippy brain is firing at warp speed right now.

I have heard they taste like crab. In Wichita many Vietnamese would fish for them at the river because it was free food.

Fresh water lobster. What could be more natural?

We don’t get them in the UK but an American friend once said to me “they live in ditches and eat shit” so that has put me off.

They live in streams, too, @downtide. Most around here do, but I have also seen them burrowed into swampy ground. They mostly eat the same things most fish and insects eat – living and dead animals and plants.

If you like shellfish and you get a chance, you should try them. Very tasty.
