What are your thoughts on the Serial case?
For those who have no idea what I’m asking, clear 12 hours on your calendar and listen here.
Do you think they convicted the right guy, whether or not there was reasonable doubt at the time of the trial? What do you think of the recent interview with Jay?

Is there not some more concise way of getting the details than spending 12 hours listening to podcasts? That’s quite a time demand.
@Darth Algar There was a piece on NPR recently (Terri Gross?) which had an extensive interview with the journalist and quotes from the alleged murderer. I found it gave me enough information about the case.
@Darth_Algar Well, the short answer is… no. If you haven’t heard of Serial, I can only recommend that you do listen to it. It’s kind of a massive story right now, so it’s not unreasonable to expect that some people on Fluther have followed this podcast.
There is no shortage of sites with comments sections full of people voicing their opinions without ever having listened to the podcast – I’m not sure why people try to do that. I’m interested in the opinions of those who have heard it, through all its ups and downs, and may have come to a conclusion – or not. My own opinion changed frequently even throughout the series.
My thoughts:
1. A decent defense would have been able to plant a reasonable doubt in the minds of the jury. The defense lawyer did a lousy job.
2. Jay’s interview is self serving, as self serving as his testimony at trial. Too many holes, too many contradictions, too much of his own speculation trying to rationalize his version of events.
3. Baltimore PD took the easy way out of the original investigation, didn’t check facts, built a story and didn’t try alternative explanations.
4. The DA’s office should have thrown this back at the PD and said figure it out, but teh DA just wanted a conviction.
But while I don’t think he should be in prison, I don’t think Adnan has very good grounds for an appeal to overturn and have a new trial.
@dappled_leaves I don’t think so, there just seem to be too many things that don;t explain how he could have killed Hae Min, buried her, and gotten back into his life so quickly.
@zenvelo Yeah. I want to reserve my own conclusions (if they are?) until more people have answered, but I completely understand that.
Someone at my book group had talked about “Serial” but since I’m busy binge watching “Gilmore Girls” this winter, I don’t have time for it. Sorry.
@janbb Well, we’ll have to have a whole other discussion about that series sometime. :)
However, I think if you made time for just one hour of Serial, you’d find that another 11 hours somehow appeared out of nowhere.
^^That’s what I’m afraid of!
So, before I invest the hours – because it seems like an interesting story on its own account – please confirm “This is a true story?” That is, there was a real murder of a real girl, and this isn’t some kind of docu-drama? That will perhaps determine how I listen, but I suppose I will listen to it as a tale (one hopes) well told in any case.
@CWOTUS This is a true story, about a real crime and its aftermath. Definitely worth the time – come back and let us know what you think!
I might also add: this podcast will have real consequences for the people involved in this murder. It might result in the accused being set free, or in another person being charged for the crime. We simply don’t know yet.
