What's the worst movie you've ever seen in theaters?

Asked by rockfan (14632points) January 7th, 2015

I saw Under the Skin a few months ago, and it was a movie that I was really anticipating. It was so bad that I was almost fuming in my seat that I was actually wasting my time. I really don’t like walking out of a movie, no matter how bad it is.

Star wars the Empire Strikes Back… I was just a kid and my father said that Darth Vader eats a live pig… traumatized me for years.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
It’s generational.

Dreamcatcher Guys in the woods who shit out scary aliens who in human form randomly speak with English accents. (Yes, just as idiotic as it sounds.)

Waterworld. Kevin Costner owes me 2 and a half hours of my life.

I’ve erased so many from my memory banks. I had to look at my ratings on IMDB. Year One was truly awful with Jack Black. I can’t even remember why I went to see this and with the rating I gave it, clearly I shouldn’t have bothered.

A thing about a duck ohh wait just remembered “Howard the duck” when I was a kid insufferable…

Sphere and The Saint are the only two movies I didn’t stay to finish.

Really, really, bad.

I’d go with Sphere as the worst, because how do you screw up that cast, that bad?

@syz – Dreamcatcher was horrible in so many ways. It just kept changing course and none of them were good. I watched it one night when I was sick and tried to rewatch it later to see if maybe I just was out of it. Bad no matter how sick you are.

X-Men Origin: Wolverine. It was so dry that I couldn’t follow the story at all.

I think I saw a careboars movie decades ago.

Epic movie. I’m sure there are others but intentionally avoided them eg. Transformers.

I almost saw the new TMNT movie recently. Went with The Equaliser instead.
I watched a pirated stream of the turtles movie later, and turned it off after 30 minutes. What a turd.

Solaris. I walked out..

Yogi fucking Bear.
Went with the family a couple of years ago, to say it was shite would be an insult to shite.

A pretentious art house film called “The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover”

Yes the confusion of the title gives you an idea what the movie was like. Truly execrable.

ragingloli's avatar

@Buttonstc
Surely better than Boyhood.

elbanditoroso's avatar

@Buttonstc – I actually liked that one. Definitely offbeat, but entertaining and a European sort of way

I think it was called “Rocketman.” Truly terrible. The only redeeming feature was that we saw it in a drive-in. Love those!

I am totally embarrassed to admit that I went to see the Son of the Mask. Gives bad movies a bad rap and should be in it’s own category.

filmfann's avatar

I have seen most of the movies listed above, and I thought most of them were good.
@janbb Hope you aren’t talking about Rocketeer.
@talljasperman Empire is widely considered to be the best of the Star Wars films.

As for me, the worst is subjective. It is easy to say It’s Alive was the worst, but they weren’t trying to make great cinema, and didn’t have a big budget.
The Worst should be an epic fail. Big budget, visions of awards, and maybe Academy Award winning actors. By that criteria, maybe that last Transformers movie, or American Beauty.

janbb's avatar

@filmfann I think I was. (Hangs head in shame.)

I was so looking forward to seeing the movie “Boyhood” that got so many rave reviews. about a boys life during 12 years with the same actors being used during the making of the movie. It was interesting seeing the main character grow from a young child to going away to college. I was so disappointed when I saw that the movie had to lower itself to be partisan politically for some reason. It ruined the whole movie for me.

Now I remember why I rarely if ever go to movies. Deep down they are all the same Hollywood dribble. I should have known better.

A couple of weeks ago I read in the paper that obama called the movie “Boyhood” his favorite movie of the year. That alone should have told me….................

shame on me. I wanted to walk out but didn’t have the guts to.

Darth_Algar's avatar

Is the problem that it’s partisan political, or that it doesn’t agree with your partisan politics?

funkdaddy's avatar

@filmfann – The same American Beauty that won best picture that year?

not sure if serious

ragingloli's avatar

@Darth_Algar
His favourite director ever is Leni Riefenstahl

Dutchess_III's avatar

It has been decades since I went to the theater. I don’t recall seeing any bad movies. I always made sure it had good reviews before I spent my money there.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

Son of God that was a hatchet job that would make Encino Man or Weekend at Bernie’s look Oscar worthy.

talljasperman's avatar

@flimfann I was 4 year’s old when I watched it at a theater. I got sick and had to go home.

talljasperman's avatar

I walked out from the last Batman film and asked for a refund. It was too loud. I watched it in dvd later.

rojo's avatar

I wish I could remember what it was. It is the only movie I walked out on. Supposed to be a comedy but was crap.

filmfann's avatar

@funkdaddy totally serious. I hate that movie.

sahID's avatar

I have not watched a movie in a theater in over a decade, and I can’t recall ever walking out on a movie before that. Based on overall audience reaction, I would have to pick A Clockwork Orange, which I saw on campus in college. By the time the movie was halfway through, half of the audience had already left.

Buttonstc's avatar

@elbanditoroso

Yes, I’m aware that I’m in the minority on this one but if I want to see a black comedy with cannibalism, I’ll take “Eating Raoul” any day of the week.

“The Cook…” was the darling of critics because of it’s art style (clothing colors change to match the room, etc.) and its presumed political allegory to Thatcherism and such but it just doesn’t make up for the sheer brutality with an annoying boy soprano caterwauling in the background.

Yes, it is very European indeed:)

filmfann's avatar

@sahlD Good call on Clockwork Overrated. Half of Kubrick’s films are genius, the other half unwatchable.

Darth_Algar's avatar

Dr. Strangelove is the only Kubrick film I’ve seen that I actually found enjoyable.

ragingloli's avatar

Netflix probably does not count, but just yesterday I saw a Japanese movie, called Rape Zombie: Lust of the Dead. It was one of the worst best worst movies I have ever seen.
It has 2 sequels, and I plan to watch both of them.

rockfan's avatar

@Darth_Algar Have you seen Paths of Glory?

ibstubro's avatar

I would not watch A Clockwork Orange today, @sahID,but it was a valuable part of my college experience.

As was Rocky Horor.

Dutchess_III's avatar

The worst move ever was Paris, Texas!
