How are you handling this Arctic cold?

Asked by marinelife (62485points) January 8th, 2015

I have not been outside (except to stand at the back door while my doggie went out to go) since the deeper-than-forecast snow on Tuesday. Meanwhile, my poor husband has struggled to work (he had to walk to the Metro station the first day because the bus never came). It is in the single digits today.

How are you coping? Have you kept power?

Doing OK. I inherited a wonderful down parka from my son; with that and my fleece-lined jeans and ridiculous snow boots, I feel no pain.

The problem is with my dog. He really needs his daily romp at the dog park, but he has very short hair and refuses to wear a coat. The last few trips to the park have involved brief excursions into the park until he couldn’t stand it anymore, then sitting in the car for awhile with the heater running until he thaws enough for another round. Last night, with wind chills around -30, we didn’t even try. Probably the same tonight. It’s going to be a long winter for him.

gailcalled's avatar

^^^ Tell him I know exactly how he feels. 7˚ here now. May go up to low twenties.

marinelife's avatar

@thorninmud Doggies are a problem. Mine has been reluctant to go out with the snow on the ground. Unlike Bao Bao, he doesn’t care for it.

Going to Florida today. I know – shoot me.

I find the cold and dark of winter increasingly unpleasant. And this recent cold has been an assault.

I’ve been kind of glad I don’t have a Frodo to walk this week!

gondwanalon's avatar

Sorry for your pain. It’s been a warm winter here in Tacoma, WA. Feels more like Spring. Bulbs are starting to come up. It’s been in the 40–50ºF here and we’ve been doing a lot of outrigger canoe and dragon boat paddling. And other fun stuff.

Jaxk's avatar

The temperature here is not likely to get above 65. I hate the cold but at least it is still warm enough for golf.

jca's avatar

@Jaxk: Not above 65? Where do you live? I wish it would get to 65 today here! (southern NY).

It’s freezing out – I feel bad for the car in this weather. I also always feel bad for stray animals – ones that are not really equipped to live in the cold, like dogs and cats.

Luckily I can stay at work all day, and don’t even have to leave to get lunch. I have my own office and the heat is kicking in here, which is beautiful. People come in and ask how I can stand it being so warm. I love love love it.

I am hoping it warms up to near low 30’s soon, maybe next week. I’ll take that.

@jca – I’m in California. I played golf on Tuesday and I had to take off my sweater, it was a bit warm). I’ve been watching the weather back east and I don’t envy you that cold. I’ve lived back there before and want no part of it.

DominicY's avatar

As usual, I experience none of it in California. 65 here in Palo Alto. But to be honest, I want to go to the mountains and experience some real cold. That probably sounds insulting to people in the center of the country :P

zenvelo's avatar

When it was in the single digits in Colorado last Friday I went for a 4 mile hike. That’s just winter.

Like @Jaxk I was a bit chilled at 50 on the way to work, but I just turned the heat off in the office because San Francisco has warmed up quite a bit. It will be comfy when I go running this afternoon.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Just staying out of it. It’s 19 but windier than hell so it feels a lot colder than 19!

anniereborn's avatar

Staying inside as much as I am able to. Extra blankets on the bed. And a space heater right by my computer desk.

Cruiser's avatar

Minus 32F here with wind chill and I am doing what I normally do. I put on my Columbia coat, furry hat and gloves, booties and a jacket on the shorthair dog and go for a mile and a half walk around the block. My newer car has remote starter and heated seats and steering wheel and don’t know how I survived days like this without them and my older SUV now just sits buried in snow. The only thing left to do is to get a snow blower to start.

Michael_Huntington's avatar

I’m in my shorts and I have the window open. Come at me.

I’m in Florida so I can’t complain or say I am in arctic weather. This morning I woke to 39 degrees, definitely chilly outside. I was do glad I had switched my heater back on before I went to bed last night. It’s in the 50’s now, 3:00 in the afternoon, sunny blue skies, slight breeze.

I’ve lived in brutal cold though. I know how I handle it. If it’s sunny it makes it much more tolerable. The freezing cold wears me out. If I have to walk or be out in it for a prolonged time, when I finally get inside and warm up I wind up taking a nap usually. I don’t purposely lie down to go to sleep, but if I sit down in front if the TV I usually do fall asleep. It sucks up my energy the cold weather, even though I tolerate it pretty well. Layers are the big trick. First layer right against your skin; long johns or similar. It makes a huge difference.

Under 25 degrees is when I feel it is brutal. Over 25 I can bundle up and handle it.

Cold outside doesn’t aggravate me too much, assuming I don’t have to be out in it too long. What really really bothers me is being cold in my house. I used to keep my heat around 68 (living in NC and TN as an adult) and on rare occasion go up to 70. I wanted to save energy and money. When I was younger I rarely was cold indoors. Not when I lived in MI, MD, or NY. I have promised never to do that again if I can afford it. Now my heat is kept between 72 and 74. I lower it to 70 when I’m out of the house during the day.

Where is that Global Warming they keep bragging about?

jaytkay's avatar

I’m enjoying the cold. It’s -2F today. I have appropriate clothes.

I took the office dog (German shepherd) out to run on the nearby golf course, he really likes the snow. Though after 5 minutes he headed back home, in warmer weather I have to drag him back inside.

JLeslie's avatar

@Jaxk Oh, don’t say that. Delete delete.

dappled_leaves's avatar

This is Canada. We take it in stride. :)

zenvelo's avatar

@Jaxk It’s in Australia

And you might call it Global Climate Change to be accurate.

Cruiser's avatar

My wife just posted this meme on her FB page. lol

Dutchess_III's avatar

I saw that too, @Cruiser! I shared it. It’s a very good question!

gondwanalon's avatar

@zenvelo The climate has always been changing. If you want to be accurate then isn’t “it” best called “human global climate disruption”?

Stay warm!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

When it hit 1.2F I turned off the thermometer. And made sure the birdfeeders were full. They appreciated that. My hands didn’t. :)

jca's avatar

As I get older I find it harder to tolerate the cold. It also seems to take me longer to warm up. Sometimes when I come home I take a hot shower. That helps. I also wear socks to bed in the cold weather.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@jca I lost weight from those shots I had, Makes the cold worst. I never remember it being as bad when I was younger, but maybe I was too stupid to notice?

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

@zenvelo where our PM and current government are still denying climate change is a problem.

Pachy's avatar

I’m in the Texas capital, where for the past few days the windchill temps have been hovering around freezing during the day and much colder than that at night, and I tell ya, my bones are rebelling big-time. Sleet’s predicted for tonight and tomorrow morning… yuck!

rojo's avatar

Living in Texas, we are doing ok, finally broke out a coat today however.

Haleth's avatar

My workplace is ridiculously drafty. We have automatic doors, and whenever someone walks in a big gust of cold air comes in.

I’ve been wearing two layers of socks, a sweater under a thermal fleece pullover, leggings under my jeans, a scarf, and a cute knitted cap. It’s actually really toasty. One of my friends said I look like a lesbian lumberjack who hunts Bigfoot in her spare time.

Here2_4's avatar

I believe you should share a photo, @Haleth . I am curious as to the accuracy of that description, and some humor might do us all well.

Brian1946's avatar

I’m doing okay.

The Rocky and Sierra Nevada mountains have been doing a good job of keeping the vortex away from my neighborhood. ;-)

Dutchess_III's avatar

I don’t remember the cold when I was younger. I know I WAS cold, because I remember running my hands under cold water to thaw them (warm water hurt like hell) but….I just don’t remember feeling unpleasant like I do now.

jerv's avatar

After spending about 30 years in New England, I’m glad I don’t have to deal with it too much any more. It’s about 40 degrees right now, and I don’t think I’ve seen it go below 25 yet this year.

Still, despite having left the region for slightly warmer climates, I laugh at those who under-dress, don’t appreciate the value of layers, or just plain cannot cope.

Cruiser's avatar

Still -4F….when will these weather morons on TV get it right??? Grrrrrr

jca's avatar

Can everyone remind us all where they live with the temps they’re referencing?

I live in southern NY. Temps in NYC right now (Saturday, 9 a.m.) about 16 F. That means where I live it’s probably about 6 F.

gailcalled's avatar

8˚ now but with the blessing of sun and blue sky; it feels positively balmy compared to last week. I am about 110miles north of @jca, one hour SE of Albany, NY.

I can see a blue jay perched on a pine tree bough that is still weighed down from yesterday’s 4” of snow.

Cruiser's avatar

@jca Chicago area…beautiful sunny morn….now a sweltering -3F

jca's avatar

I just went out and put some hard cat food out for the crows.

zenvelo's avatar

@jca Isn’t that like putting out black feathered cat food for the cats?

dappled_leaves's avatar

@jca They would probably prefer cat. ;)

JLeslie's avatar

-3F?! That sucks.

jca's avatar

The cats are not interested in going out right now. If they do, they are not out for more than two minutes and they’re easy to get back in.

jaytkay's avatar

-3F?! That sucks.

No, it’s beautiful! I’m going out for a walk in a moment. Just for fun.

Update: I see someone asked “where?”. I am in Chicago. This morning we had -3 F. Sadly it’s up to +19 F now.

janbb's avatar

Down in Florida and it is 75 degrees. Sat on the beach this morning. SW a freight train with cars of rock salt heading north!

JLeslie's avatar

It was beautiful here too. In the 60’s. You must be in South FL @janbb.

janbb's avatar

@JLeslie. Yeah. Delray.

JLeslie's avatar

Oh. Go to Terra Fiamma if you like Italian. It’s just west of the turnpike on Atlantic. The food is delicious. The Chicken Cuomo is amazing and we really like the penne a la vodka too. Everything’s good though. We say it’s the best Italian restaurant this side of the Atlantic. We love it.
