Is it normal in sports for a defenceman to never score? (details inside)

Asked by talljasperman (21919points) January 12th, 2015

I played soccer, basketball, and baseball and indoor soccer and I never scored a goal. I always cleared the ball and passed it to the offense. WORSE still I scored on my own net in indoor soccer.

Ashley Cole made 99 appearances for England (football) without scoring a single goal.
Didn’t stop him from being rated as a world class defender.

It’s not impossible for a defenseman (any sport) to score, but it’s pretty rare. It would be a fluke type of situation, which just doesn’t happen often at all.

Don’t undersell the importance of defense, however. It’s at least as important as offense. Your goalkeeper is counting on you.

Of course, there are exceptions to the rule, some players couldn’t hit a cow’s arse with a banjo.

In many sports it’s not unheard of, but it is rare, since defensemen focus on defense, not offense. In baseball there’s not really any difference since players play both defense and offense, depending on whether their team is at bat or not.
