Is it common for kids who have gone through speech therapy to wind up with slightly different speaking habits because of it?

That is the point, after all, isn’t it?

Well, it makes for awkward conversations. I mean, he’s 7. The speech therapy was 2 years ago. Will he grow out of it?

I would say trying to re-teach a 7 year old to have to speak in a much different way than he was accustomed to will take time to master and could very well open the door to “ums” and ah’s” as he now has to think on how he should speak where before it was automatic to speak as he was once comfortable to speak. That is a lot to expect for someone of his age…..IMO just give him time and give him a smile to reinforce the times he does speak confidently.

It would undoubtedly depend on what speech impediment the child is struggling with. It may be something he’s developed as a result of the therapy or even a deliberate addition to help him re-learn how to speak. As @Cruiser suggests, the therapist may have encouraged the child to slow down and think about what he says or to mentally go through some process that has led to how he speaks now. I’d imagine whether he always does it always will depend on what it is he’s correcting and how pronounced the problem is/was.

I think the original problem was that he wasn’t finishing the words. The word “Bed” came out as “beh.” “Dad” was “Dah.” So the sentence “Dad went to bed” came out like, “Dah weh to beh.”

@Cruiser the therapy wasn’t recent. It was 2 or 3 years ago.
