I have some bananas and apples that are slightly past their best. What can I make to use them up?

I’d freeze the bananas for smoothies and use the apples to make some homemade applesauce.
Who am I kidding? That’s too much work. I’d just toss them.
Use can use both for cake or cupcakes and then freeze the cakes or give them away.
Apple sauce is another good idea I had not thought of. You can eat the apple sauce straight or use it to bake in lieu of oil for many recipes. Especially chocolate baked goods like brownies. I use half the oil and apple sauce to make up the other half. Slightly more apple than the oil would have been.
Apple cobbler.
Or, just toss them, which was also mentioned above.
Freeze the bananas, discard the apples.
You can bake apple chunks into banana bread, it adds a nice texture and taste .
I love the suggestions to throw the lot away. That was my first instinct!
@jaytkay what would I do with the frozen bananas?
I had thought of banana cake and adding apples might be nice
@livelaughlove21 has the right idea, frozen bananas are for smoothies.
Your cake sounds better, though.
waffle batter or muffins. If the apples aren’t too cut them in half bake them with cinnamon and raisens. Multiple recipes
I love baked apples, which I make in the microwave, and use bananas for smoothies, which I am drinking more now due to some health issues.
@gailcalled Smoothies are a great idea for the bananas. Can you freeze the smoothie for later?
No. It has a 4–5 day shelf life in the refrigerator.
You don’t need to freeze the smoothie. Freeze the banana and make the smoothie when you want it. Easy.
Freeze the bananas in the peel? I think I once tried that and they were gross when I defrosted them. Maybe I did something wrong?
^ Yep, just stick them in the freezer. Then, I like to use running warm water to de-frost. The peel comes right off. The banana looks gross – slimy. Tastes fine, though.
I like to amuse guests by offering them an arctic banana. Children love that.
That’s the problem. Gross and slimy and I’m going to throw them out.
@JLeslie Why would you defrost the banana if you’re using it for a smoothie? Blending the frozen banana (or any fruit) eliminates the need for ice, which means no watered down smoothies. I take mine out of the peel, cut them in half, and freeze them in individual snack baggies. When I’m ready for my smoothie, I just take it out of the bag and pop it in the blender with the other ingredients. There’s no time for the banana to get slimy before it’s pulverized into a delicious treat. There’s no difference in taste.
Freezing bananas to eat them by themselves, I don’t know about that. But for smoothies, it’s pretty perfect.
^^^I almost never make smoothies. I just thought it was a good idea for the OP. The only frozen bananas I eat are the ones with chocolate on them on a Popsicle stick.
But, your idea sound like a good one.
Oh, I thought smoothies was what we were discussing since you asked if you could freeze the smoothie…
I did ask about the smoothies. It was understandably confusing.
Thanks for the suggestions. I think I’ll pass on the frozen bananas – I don’t eat smoothies. But I will try a banana cake and report back on the results and how my fussy eaters reacted.
My mother used to seek out the overripe bananas for making banana nut bread. The black ones are sweeter somehow. Same thing with apples. I miss that smell.
@majorrich When the bananas are going black I toss them in the freezer and make banana bread at my leisure.
Now that my mother is gone, my attempts at her recipe have been complete failures. I suck.
^ My potato cakes aren’t a patch on my dad’s @majorrich. I empathise with your problem.
