Have you ever overcome a phobia?

Asked by Stinley (11525points) February 2nd, 2015

I’m talking about real phobias, not just a major dislike of something. Have you managed to control your reaction to the phobic stimulus? How did you do it? Has it lasted or did it come back again? How do you feel now?

I successfully overcame my fear of dentists. In the past going to the dentist’s was a real nightmare to me. I would cry loudly and try to run away when taken to the dentists, despite being repeatedly told that dentists were the only one who could cure my teeth problem. Then there was a time when I had that teeth condition that forced me to go to the dentist’s regularly. At first my reaction was the same, but then after so many times of going to the dentist’s the fear just weakened, and one day it disappeared completely! I think my fear got numbed when I had to face it repeatedly. It’s just like I got used to it.

Around the age of six or seven I fell twelve feet landing on my face (broke my nose and little toe), which resulted in my fear of heights. As a young adult, I had a job in Chicago’s Loop and took the elevated train to go to work. Whenever possible I would sit in the middle of the car on the side where I could look down at the street as the train rounded a curve. It terrified me, though I believed that I was safe. Gradually its intensity diminished but never vanished.

To prove my ability to overcome my fear, I sat on the ledge of an open window on the sixteenth floor of the Daily News building and watched the traffic below. I was still frightened but it was not controlling my behavior. As a stagehand, I was required to work high above the stage; my more than thirty years was accident free. The fear remained. However, likely do to my respect (controlled fear) for heights it never interfered with my tasks.

I was in a car accident at 16 driving a boyfriends car. Nobody was hurt but I totaled his car.
( He still wanted to date me, haha )
I had a driving phobia for the nest 10 years or so, fear of having another accident, but slowly it faded away. Building on your confidence is key.

I have never had a phobia, but my sister does. She has an irrational terror of frogs. As far as I know, she still does.

@Dutchess_III LOL….send her over this way, the frog capitol of CA.
The roar from our pond every night would send your poor sister into a state of hysteria. Tree frogs, green frogs, bullfrogs, leopard frogs…from tiny to huge…frogs, frogs, everywhere! haha

She probably would go into hysterics. I mean, I don’t understand it, but she is absolutely terrified of frogs. It’s serious.

I have been terrified of Bees as a kid and into adult hood , but now while I still don’t like them I don’t freak out like I used to.

Fear of heights, I had it since I was a kid. I got over it by exposing myself to it a bit at a time.

As a child I was had my bone marrow tested I saw they showed me the needle before trying to use it it took 7 adults to hold me down and I was screaming terrified. I was probably 3 at the time. My
Mom was surprised I remembered the incident. Needless to say any needles even butterfly needles sent me over the edge. Yearly checkups titers and such were torture. But I had to overcome when I got sick. Since then I have had terrible incidents with digging arterial draws… Nerve being poked infiltration scar tissue rolling veins etc but I still keep my cool.

Also get a. Bit of vertigo but I still have rock climbed coming down is much harder. Or standing up to the edge. I usually sit and scoot to the edge. Buildings looking straight down I do get dizzy and shaky but it doesn’t stop me. I’ve even been on the sling shot.

@Unbroken your last paragraph describes me perfectly, except for the “sling shot.” Congratulations on your masteries .
