My RCA 1000w receiver keeps cutting out during movies.

Asked by anonymous6059 (119points) February 4th, 2015

I have solved this problem before by using the hdmi hookup instead of the, um, red and white stereo hook up. However, I can’t use that hook up any longer and wanted to try to use my system again. I just can’t figure out why the stereo hook up would lose sound at different points of the film. If you back the film up it will always happen in the same places. I have read that this is a common issue with this cheap system and it might be related to a possible auto silence mechanism built into the receiver. Still, when I played it through the hdmi this issue went away.

So, I would like to know if anyone knows what might be the problem. I would also like to know if anyone might know how to convert the red and white hook up into hdmi. I have found a lot of converters that will do the opposite, go from hdmi to stereo, but not the other way around.

I would keep describing the issue but I fear tl;dr

I had that problem with my cheap Samsung DVD player. The fix was getting a more expensive one.

Does it cut out while you play anything else for that long a period?
Does it have a relay? When you turn it on does it not output any sound for a couple seconds, then ‘click’ and it all comes on?
The relay could be failing. Some are replaceable (socket), some are not.
If it’s not still under warranty and you feel a little handy I suggest to open it up and at least take a look at any connections. Unseat connectors and put them back on one at a time.
