Can dart boards dry out or not?

Asked by MikeEloff (95points) February 23rd, 2015

I started playing darts a while ago and have taken quite a fancy to it now. Someone told me that I should keep my dart board in a cupboard so it won’t dry out, is it true that a dart board can indeed dry out? I have seen pubs with boards hanging on the walls for years now, so it seems unlikely to me.

They can, but it takes a long time in an inhospitable environment to do so. It really depends on how dry the air is.

In the 1930’s very hard wood was used to make dart boards. These boards were soaked in water every night to soften them up for play. Years thereafter, a British company called Nodor then made boards out of compressed sisal so that people would be able to play with dart boards without having to soak them, in other words, play with limited maintenance, hence the boards we have today that doesn’t dry out. A good quality board will wear out before he bristles come apart. They are extremely durable.
