Have you ever passed on an opportunity because you felt it was too risky, then kicked yourself later?
In the late 70’s, early 80’s I worked for Boeing Computer Services. There was an older lady I worked with, who had been there for 25 years. She sometimes told of the time when co-workers Frank and Dan Carney were approaching people asking if they would invest $500 in this pizza restaurant idea they had. Some did, my older lady co-worker said “No.” And was kicking herself to this day.
Once, around 2004, I was visiting my aunt and uncle in Seattle and my aunt showed me this closet full of fur coats, probably from the 50’s and 60’s. Real fur coats. There were, maybe, half a dozen. She asked if I wanted them. Conscious of the societal anti-animal fur movement I declined.
Now I’m kind of wondering if, from a financial point of view, I made a mistake. (Oh, BTW, she was the mother of the cousin who won $90 million on a powerball ticket!)
Conversely, have you ever taken a risk and had it pay off?

Yes. But I didn’t kick myself very hard.
The way I figured it, I made the best decision I could make, based on what I knew at that time. If I had known then what I know now, that would be different.
The past is the past. I don’t spend much time worrying about what I cannot change.
I know. In retrospect I didn’t always make the right decision but it was the right decision at the time. I was given such a guilt trip by my sister, calling me stupid and stuff.
No. I’m sure I’ve missed opportunities, but I don’t have regrets.
EDIT: Stay tuned. In my next thread, you can observe me eating my words.
What do you guys think of the fur coats? Should I have taken them?
^ I would have. I would then have sold them and proceeded to donate to some charity which fights against the fur industry.
You took a stand, though. That’s something to be proud of, and I think you should be.
Yes. Many times. But I kick myself more for taking risks and get into troubles. I’m a risk taker, but my judgement isn’t very good.
By the way I’m going to take another risk in the near future. Maybe I will ask the collective about that so that I know whether to really take it.
No. I’ve passed up opportunities but I’ve never regretted my decisions. The opportunities weren’t right for me then. My experience has been when one door closes, another opens and I’ve always found new opportunities and paths to follow.
Yes. I can think if a few things. I have no idea what would have been, but for the most part I wish I had taken the risk.
