Am I waiting long enough for a response from the job interview?

Asked by Heather13 (495points) February 25th, 2015

I had a job interview one week and two days ago. The interview seemed to have gone quite well. The interviewer, who is the owner, started talking about what my duties will be and did most of the talking all the way through, only asking me a couple questions. They seemed satisfied with my main qualification, and mentioned that training would be provided. The interveiwer mentioned what I would be doing, hours expected to work, the salary, lunch breaks, tasks I will handle, and expected attire. They were particularly happy that I lived within 7 minutes of the location.  They asked when I would want to start. I mentioned “right away”. They expressed that for the remainder of that week, they still had more interviews to conduct. At the end of the interview, they asked if I had any questions, I asked 1 or 2. Then after they answered, they asked again if I had any questions, I said no, and that I was satisfied with the information they gave. The interviewer and I got up and shook hands. And departed. The interview lasted betweeen 10–15 minutes. Do you think I stand a chance?

Welcome to Fluther.

Do you have a chance? Absolutely. Sky’s the limit. You’re (potentially) in like Flynn.

However … I would continue to polish the résumé and write some more application letters and continue to work on the interview skills. (For whatever it’s worth, when the interviewer spends his or her time making announcements about everything that the job entails, hours of work and other details about the job, and asks you few or no questions about your skills, experience or qualifications for the job, it’s not going so well, but that’s not really your fault – it’s just that you got a bad interviewer. The interview should be to find out about your match with the position, and in order to do that the interviewer should be asking you questions – mostly – not lecturing.)

Yes, you have a chance. That’s quite a short interview in my experience. It’s possible they already have someone in mind if they didn’t really ‘interview’ you. What sort of job is it? Did they say when they’d let you know?

If the time when they told you they’d let you know has past, you could follow up with a phone call to ask if a decision has been made.

I totally agree with @CWOTUS that you should continue looking for other positions. That will help pass the time while you wait too.

I would call and ask. It couldn’t hurt at this point. Possibly working in your favor as it helps them remember you and shows a sustained interest in the position. If they don’t have an answer I would ask when you should expect one. That way the waiting game isn’t so bad. And it is not an unreasonable request.

I, too, would call and ask, or possibly even stop by in person.

I know it’s not the same as interviewing with the owner but I was impressed at my local Aldi store when the nice looking boy in front of me inquired about an application he had put in previously. I said something to the checker after he left, and she said, “Oh, it’s not easy to get on here. I came in every day for a week and a half before I managed to catch the boss and get hired.”

Show interest.

I called them today. They took my name and number and said they will call back.

A million things happen almost daily especially at small businesses. Processes always take longer than you expect. I would call and say that you want to know if the job is still open and that you are still interested.

You did send a thank you note, didn’t you?

It is a medical office. They are seeking receptionist. I was a reservationist and have experience with telepnone and helping customers. I was also a front desk clerk. She asked if I had any medical experience. Told her no. She said thats ok, that omly a couple things medically they may ask from time to time. But that they would provide training. The interviewer did ask if I had any question. I asked about two. Then she asked again if I had any questions. I told her I was satisfied with everything. I called a couple days ago to check. The person who answered had me hold for 4 minutes. Then took my name eand number and said I will recieve a call. Nothing yet.
