Which sport has never had a fatality occur during competition?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) March 1st, 2015

What sport, from middle school, high school, college, state and national and international competition that has never had a fatality or accident in which a participant died from? Happened a few times in football, boxing, equestrian competitions, even bobsledding (I believe), there are certainly sports which never recorded a fatality doing official competition.

Intercollegiate Tiddly-winks.

I can’t think of any other sport anywhere that hasn’t had at least one death.

You mean if one looks hard enough a death in an international table tennis match might be found?

@Hypocrisy_Central I guess you have answered your own question, and better than any of us have.

@ragingloli “chess?”

Might not be from competition, but I know of a man who died at the board during a match in Tromso, Norway last year.

^^ Maybe somehow someone drowned during synchronized swimming (do don’t know how) or ice skating? Some of those throws and lifts can be hazardous. I lean towards gymnastics with the possibility of snapping a neck, but I can’t bet the farm against that.

Curling would be my guess

Fencing is safer than badminton and biathlon is safer than those two sporting events. I would not have guessed that sailing was the safest. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/leg-head-injuries-frequent-at-olympics/

Frisbee golf. It’s inherently safe, and no one old enough to randomly die from a heart attack has even heard of it.

The deaths in Tromsø probably had more to do with the heavy drinking than the playing of the game. http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2014/aug/15/deaths-world-chess-olympiad-norway

Also, I’d like to point out that chess is not a sport. It is a game.

Um…Maybe golf?
I’ve never seen a person getting hit by a golf ball

@Hypocrisy_Central “Maybe somehow someone drowned during synchronized swimming”
Doesn’t it have a low possibility of a swimming athlete drowning? They’ll at least be able to float

@cazzie “The deaths in Tromsø probably had more to do with the heavy drinking than the playing of the game.”

Hence “might not be from competition”.

@ahro0703 many deaths by lightning during golf.

zenvelo's avatar

@ahro0703 People drop dead on the golf course all the time. It’s a sport that attracts overweight men with bad hearts that think riding around in a golf cart is aerobic exercise.

@1TubeGuru There was a death in the America’s Cup training in 2013 when a boat flipped at high speed and broke apart, trapping the sailor under water for ten minutes after he’d had a blunt force trauma.

Ladies arm wrestling, someone broke a nail one time, but no funeral.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

@cazzie [...many deaths by lightning during golf.
You mean they are not even wise enough to STOP playing golf until the thunder and lightning passes?!? 8–0

zenvelo's avatar

Table Tennis (ping-pong) can be deadly too!

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

^ I wanna know that. How does one die in a tennis match? They got hit just right with a crazy serve in their medulla oblongata, or took a perfect hit off a smash at the net that shattered their nose pushing bone splinters into their brain?

cazzie's avatar

Fishing tops the deaths by lightning stats, but golf is still in the stats. and people are dumb. and I am reminded again I’m being stupid for hanging out on this website.

ahro0703's avatar

Okay, now I got one!
Thumb wrestling maybe. Possibly broken thumb, but not really fatal

ahro0703's avatar

@judochop, maybe in curling a person fell down on ice and bumped their head very hard on the ice or the curling ball-my creativity proves it
So I’ll go with thumb wrestling
