Is this type of memory problem something I should worry about?

Asked by rockfan (14632points) March 5th, 2015

I was reading some online articles about movie news, and I was excited that Jeff Goldblum has been added to the cast of Independence Day 2. My brother is a big fan of the movie so I wanted to tell him about the news. For the life of me, I could not remember Jeff Goldblum’s name, I had to look it up on Wikipedia. I’m 23, and I have generalized anxiety disorder. Does this sound normal to you?

It’s been normal to me for about 10 years but I am a wee bit older. However, you don’t need anything more to worry about. It happens to everyone sometimes and the anxiety will cause lapses at times. But don’t worry about it unless it is happening a lot and even then, I would wait until the anxiety is under control. But do talk to your doctor or psychiatrist if it is stressing you.

Completely normal and nothing to worry about. Seriously. This happens to everyone, and it can exacerbated by anxiety. Ruminating thoughts and anxiety do not make information retrieval easy. When you are calm and your mind is at ease, things like this can be easier.

Short term memory loss can be attributed to many things. Sleep deprivation, medication, depression, anxiety, nutritional deficiencies are some of them. Talk with your doctor to see if medication or other factors might be at the root cause. Good luck, and try not to worry about this, it will make it worse. http://www.webmd.com/brain/memory-loss

I guess it definitely is anxiety. I’m worrying about so much right now, and I’m going mind blank on other names. If I was calm and relaxed, I could easily remember them.

No worries, just your anxiety. I can relate since I have it also.

I do this kind of stuff constantly, I’m 22 and also a pretty anxious person. I find I do better when I’m more relaxed. I think it’s an anxiety thing.

It happens to everyone.

People who are depressed and anxious sometimes experience more than the average person either as a side effect of medication they take or as a protective or defense mechanism in the brain. There has been a lot of research in recent years about purposely promoting forgetting (or not engraving memories) to help people cope with traumatic experiences.

It may be a sign you have good memory, that you were surprised you momentarily spaced Jeff Goldblum’s name.

This can be an effect of too much coffee. Also, too little sleep.

The deal is this: If you drink a lot of coffee, or you’re not getting enough sleep, or both, or if you’re over 50:

If you repeatedly forget where you left your keys, don’t worry about it. When you find your keys and don’t remember what they are for—that is when it’s time to worry.

I’m younger than you are, and this happens to me, too. It’s normal, don’t worry about it. I wouldn’t call it a problem, just a human mind. We don’t always function perfectly, and that’s okay!

Oh, sure. It’s normal. I mean, I’ve been doing it since I was a kid. You just forget the name, and then, when you aren’t even thinking about it, it just comes to you. It’s like walking into a room and forgetting what you went in for (and you think looking in the fridge will jog your memory!)

If you are an anxious person this is more than normal! You probably have thousands of things whizzing round in your mind and that makes this worse!

I hope not @rockfan. If it is, I’m screwed. I regularly have brain freezes when things I know I know are just… gone! I recollect them later. Usually at about 2am when that misplaced name suddenly pops into my mind – 8 hours too late. It’s just stress and a symptom of an overtaxed brain.

Yeah.. this is normal. I forget how old I am all the time. <—Not joking.

^^^ What everyone else said. Don’t worry about it. If this was an isolated incident, it’s completely normal.
My mom has Alzheimer’s and by now I know quite a bit about Alzheimer’s and dementia. And this doesn’t sound like it. Relax.

@johnpowell Me too. I really have to think about it sometimes or ask my husband.
