I guess that I’m just naturally more of an answerer than an asker.

Over time, ive found that most questions I have about anything are pretty easily resolved by a few minute Google search so asking it on Fluther means im leaving it to someone else to do. That seems kind of pointlesd, dont you think?

For instance, after reading a few days ago where someone asked how important it was for a Dr. to be board certified, I began to wonder how one could check on this independently of asking the Dr. himself.

I also wondered about how common it was for Drs. to falsely claim this and what the penalties would be, if any.

I thought about asking Fluther but thought I should do a quick check first. A few minutes later Google did the trick. And that happens frequently.

So, would it have been better to ask Fluther?

It’s hard to come up with good questions. I’ve long thought that the lurve system should give more weight to questions than to answers.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

I ask questions when I have one I think the community can answer. I don’t have any inclination to spend time coming up with questions just for the sake of asking questions.

ucme's avatar

Having asked 1038 of them, I see this one ain’t for me…<moves away>

longgone's avatar

I think the quality of questions is important. I’m sure I could think of something to ask every day…but if I’m not interested in the replies, I don’t see the point. While I’d like a few more questions, I would not be happy with just random ones.

janbb's avatar

Like others above, I don’t ask questions just to ask questions. I do value the practical advice and knowledge of some here and I will ask those kinds of questions. There were some periods of turmoil in my past where I valued the support and advice of Jellies, I am more likely to find my answers in myself these days. And while I still like a good intellectual discussion, I am less hot headed than I used to be and don’t need to get my dander up over issues in which everyone’s ideas are fixed. And I don’t really value trivial poll questions or what you ate for breakfast questions. All that being said, I truly care for and respect some of the people here and would be sorry if the site went down so I participate daily.

Got nothing to ask, plus as far as technical things go, online searches prove to be more efficient.

If I have a question that I think the Fluther collective can answer most effectively, I ask it here. From the asker’s perspective, I think that Fluther’s worth is in (1) the collective’s range of direct, personal experience and (2) a depth of knowledge in specific areas that makes thoughtful “opinion” answers valuable.

As others have said, I don’t ask questions for the sake of asking questions. I think that some of us are askers by nature and some of us are answerers by nature. It takes both to make a site like Fluther function.

osoraro's avatar

Because it’s not worth the aggravation.

jca's avatar

I ask a question when I can think of one that I think the Community would be a good match to answer. For example, recently I asked one or two questions about buying cars. I could google that, but would not necessarily trust the answers because I don’t know the sources or might get a lot of advertisements, whereas with the Jelly community, I know there are a bunch of smart people on here who I consider trustworthy and whose opinions I value.

Sometimes I’ll come upon a social issue or etiquette issue that I want to toss to the Community, to see what they have to say about it. It may not be something that is easily googled, but something I know that the people here may have some good ideas about. I may ask a question that I or someone else has asked a year or two ago, but I think it may be worth it to ask again, as new Jellies and cultural changes may change the current answers.

On Fluther I only ask questions when I need an answer, or suggestions.

ucme's avatar

I can’t think of a single thing that i’d need to ask you people for it to be anything useful in my life. Either I already know or i’ll get it from friends/family or a fucking book :D
The vast majority of my questions are purely for fun, like cracking on with mates down the pub, nowt wrong with that, nothing at all.

ibstubro's avatar

I have an inquiring mind, and I question most of the things I see, hear, or do. It seems a natural extension for me to post that here on Fluther. Even more, my internet is not mobile. I access by desktop only. If a question I thought of during the day occurs to me while I’m on the internet, I’m more inclined to ask it here, on Fluther than Google it. To me Fluther is sort of like having lunch with friends…why would I chase the internet when people I know are present.

I do respect that there are natural answerers, Like @Buttonstc. I do a fair share of answering and documentation. I came to Fluther more to answer than ask.

If you look at the questions on Fluther, @syz, banality is not a handicap. Or, ’quality, schmality@longgone, @Earthbound_Misfit, etc.

Thanks for that, @ucme.

Like @janbb, I “would be sorry if the site went down so I participate daily.” I try to appeal to the masses, and the newbies if possible.

@Symbeline, you have volumes of questions to ask!

Usually it is worth the aggravation, @osoraro. Usually

Much the same, @jca. I’m much the same.

1. I run out of things to ask right now.
2. I’ve realized I’m better at answering than asking (I don’t mean my answers are good, I just mean it’s more readable than my questions, at least to me).
3. Questions are limited on Fluther, but answers aren’t.

When I first joined Fluther I asked a lot of questions. It was great fun and very interesting. I was much more interested in politics back then and I also was interested in learning about Christian beliefs. I asked many questions on those topics. Many Q’s were just for fun too, not serious at all.

I guess I got a lot of questions out of my system the first year or two and have fewer now. Maybe when the presidential run for office heats up I’ll be interested in politics again.

I don’t even know if a political question will be the same without pdworkin, wunday, qingu, and some others whom I miss.

ragingloli's avatar

Will you marry me?

janbb's avatar

@ragingloli Oh, you just want to marry me so you can get a green card and come and live in America.

Berserker's avatar

@ibstubro I try to think of questions that are opinion based, hard to come up with good stuff that hasn’t been asked already. And a lot of the time, what I do want to ask would fit better in special interest forums, like video games or horror. Not enough fans here to base most of my asking around said subjects.
For technical stuff, again I can Google things in seconds. Although I have been helped here before with technical issues. Not saying it never happens, or that users don’t know what they’re talking about. But Googling is faster and more efficient. (and without comments that have nothing to do with what I’m asking)

longgone's avatar

@ibstubro If I believed the majority of Fluther’s questions tended to be of low quality, that would be even more reason for me to only ask good questions.

ibstubro's avatar

You CAN’T run out of questions, @Mimishu1995. That’s life.

You contribute a lot, @JLeslie.

Not at this time, @ragingloli.

~ @jannb

Just ask, @Symbeline. No harm, no foul.

I don’t get your point, @longgone.
Spell it out, we’re in Meta.

Mimishu1995's avatar

@ibstubro that’s why I said “right now”.

longgone's avatar

@ibstubro Well, I stated that the quality of questions is important to me. You countered with saying that the quality is low, in your opinion. If the quality of questions in general was low, that would motivate me to ask only the most interesting and well thought-out questions I have. You see?

OpryLeigh's avatar

I only ask questions when I think of something I really want people’s opinions/advice on. I don’t deliberately try and think up questions, I wait for them to come to me.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I ask for peoples opinion, or experience , anything else google does a far better job with a lot less hassle .
I also get quite tired of being treated as a school kid, when asking questions, OMG YOU DIDN’T SPACE A COMMA!!!
OR THAT IS A RUN ON SENTENCE!
Another one is you asked this type of question 2 months , 3 days, and 14hours ago, then provided a link to an old question, like really people come and go all the freaking time on this site, maybe I want a fresh opinion on this, that OK?????
so @ibstubro that is why I don’t ask more questions.

thorninmud's avatar

I’m too busy shooting down other people’s questions for frivolous reasons. Dude, I can’t do everything

janbb's avatar

@thorninmud We may have to rescind your title of “SuperMod” then – and take back the t-shirt and tights.

johnpowell's avatar

I kinda miss the old method of asking questions.

Now it is so convoluted I back out about 80% of the time before I hit the end. I think the current way was good to prevent crap but the site is so dead it might be good to have more crap. Get some more bodies and then try and bring back some quality.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@johnpowell To me, it looks like the process was the same, just all on one page instead of three different ones. Is there another difference that I’m not spotting?

johnpowell's avatar

Pretty much that the image I posted invites you to ask questions. Type and click one button and BAM.. Your question is right there.

Now it is go through a bunch a pages that remind you to make sure you didn’t screw anything up along every step. It isn’t fun and it is in no way inviting.

There is a reason Amazon patented one click purchases.

Blackberry's avatar

I don’t know what to ask, then there’s times I want to ask something but don’t feel telling personal details.

Pandora's avatar

Running out of questions I guess. I think I asked more questions when I was bored but I’ve been busy lately so I don’t come on as often. I also try to ask questions that I am truly curious about. There is also my ability to research a lot of things on line, so I often find the answer to my question before I get to place it on fluther.
I did post a question tonight if anyone is interested. It is about rebounding and I am quite curious to see if my online research about it is true.
