Were the originals better or am I just getting old?

Asked by CugelTheClueless (1542points) March 8th, 2015

The answer, of course, is both, but I’ll elaborate anyway:

I saw three things on TV last month that were supposed to be funny but just made me sad:
(1) the pilot for the Odd Couple remake
(2) Melissa McCarthy doing a Chris Farley character on the SNL 40th anniversary special.
(3) Emma Stone doing a Gilda Radner character on the SNL special.

None of the contemporary actors/comedians involved in these new versions lack talent, but somehow they all seemed so feeble compared to their predecessors. Or is it just me?

No, it is like cover songs. Very, very few meet up to the standards set by the original.

I tried a Tootsie Roll the other day. It tasted like soap.

It’s not you—the originals were definitely funnier. Of course, TV humor has changed a lot since all three of these things were originally done, but that doesn’t explain how truly awful The Odd Couple remake was.
