General Question

I have difficulty reading. What could be the cause?

Asked by talljasperman (21919points) March 20th, 2015

I used to be able to read a novel in four hours, but now I can barely read quips from Fluther. What broke in me or is my brain full? How do I fix my illiteracy?

Do you need glasses? Or if you wear glasses, maybe your prescription changed.

@chyna I have new glasses just got them two months ago… I will put them on.

I think we’ve all ended up with that problem, thanks to the instant gratification of sound bites from the internet. I can’t sit down and read for hours anymore unless I’m camping, or in the car, and disconnected.

@Dutchess_lll I think you are on to something. Thanks

@Dutchess_III I agree with this. I am reading my first book in forever. And this is only because I am really interested in the subject.

@talljasperman: Also, maybe you are on medication that affects your ability to concentrate.

tl;dr

This is how the internet broke you. AKA fuck Buzzfeed…

Took me a minute, but ROFLOL @johnpowell! Good one!

You used to be able to read a novel in four hours? Are you sure? That sounds way off, even for a fast reader.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

Perhaps you’re stressed. It may be the medication you’re on. There are lots of reasons why our concentration can be disrupted. Perhaps try to find 15 minutes a day to read. Increase the time you spend each day.

Good point by @gailcalled. If a novel is 400 pages, that’s 100 pages per hour, which is a bit more than 30 seconds per page. If you read that fast, you would have been a speed reader.

Concentration issues?

Have a look at this thread.

@gailcalled @jca 100 pages/hour doesn’t sound that crazy.

^^ beyond my ability.

@fluthernutter “100 pages/hour doesn’t sound that crazy”

Yes. Yes, it does. Unless perhaps they are picture books for children.

fluthernutter's avatar

@dappled_leaves It just sounds impressive. It’s not that crazy. I averaged 60–80 pages an hour in high school reading everything from classics to science fiction. And I doubt I’m the fastest reader out there. Have you actually ever timed yourself reading?

Given, I was a bit of a bookworm. Pretty much read everything in sight. Not exactly the norm. But far from exceptional. 100 pages/an hour sounds doable for a speed reader that was faster than me.

Stuff like philosophy, rhetoric and science would obviously take longer.

Update: The doctor told me to eat more.. and its worked. Healthy food is expensive. I’m living off of a Chinese dinner for two for now.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I can’t imagine the doctor telling you to eat more. Aren’t you already very overweight?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

No I’m very tall so it cancels out being overweight. I’m a 242 lbs. and 6 foot 5 inches adonis. I used to not eat until 5pm. Now I try to eat sooner.

Just had an eggroll. better than a Double Big Mac for $22 delivery.

You do know that we know who you are @talljasperman.

@Dutchess_III I was not hiding it.
