Do you believe in something you can't see if so what is it?

Asked by Safie (1223points) March 29th, 2015

There are many things that cannot be seen with the naked eye doesn’t mean they can’t be felt or that they don’t exist. What do you believe in that cannot be seen?

I believe there is an unseen person guiding me in my life. They try to drive me out of disasters and toward good things. I don’t want to be superstitious but there are some events in my life that seem to prove it true.

I’m an engineer. Every day I use things I cannot see. We all do. We use radio waves to communicate with our devices. We use rapid, air vibrations to make and hear sounds. We use signals from unseen satellites orbiting our planet to get our GPS location. Sometimes I use Infrared and Ultraviolet energy. I can’t see them but I know they are there because I can measure them . I also measure and use magnetic flux to switch devices on and off. Most people have used a compass to learn direction yet we do not see the magnetic field .

@Mimishu1995 That’s really interesting…i do believe there are unseen guides, what ever we want to call them that do exist we can’t always see them but we sure can sense their presence There is more out there than what meets the eye.

@LuckyGuy That’s a fab answer and so true indeed, and most of the time we think nothing of it…but there are so many things…i guess seeing is believing but not every thing is concrete or physical to touch but it exists.

The sensors that come with our bodies are so limiting. We only hear from 20 Hz to 20kHz, yet acoustic signals cover from the macrosonics, (well below 1Hz), to far ultrasonics (above 2 MHz). Bat sonar is 40kHz – 200kHz. The glass display on your phone uses SAW devices (surface acoustic waves) vibrating at 2 MHz to detect your touch when you text. Can you see the vibration? No. But you use it all the time. (Disclaimer – some phones use capacitive switches. Some use different frequencies. I use it as an example)
I believe in bacteria, viruses, neutrinos, alpha, beta and gamma rays, etc.. I can’t see them but with the help of transducers and electronics I can detect and measure them – and other people can detect and measure them too.

Oops! That neutrino that just zipped through you came form deep space. Oh, and here’s a radio wave from me to you. Now! I just sent an omni-directional 5 GHz electromagnetic pulse out. Within 80ms everyone on the planet just received a little bit of the energy (from my cordless phone).

I believe in the wind, I can’t see it but can see the effects. I use to weekend race on sailboats.

Probably the most obvious and most universal answer is air.

@ibstubro i was wondering when someone would show up with this answer, and low and behold you did..Air can’t see it and can’t live without it!

Intuition. I can’t see it – but my gut feel generally steers me right.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@anniereborn I was thinking of that one, but then do you have to include the other emotions that are a little darker, hate, greed, well then again hope fits in too.

ucme's avatar

Okay, if “Flying Spaghetti Monster” isn’t removed as unhelpful, then I guess anything is game.
I’m going to go for Daddy Xmas on a motorbike.

How dare you ridicule my sincerely held religious beliefs?

ucme's avatar

If I ridiculed anything, it was the inconsistent moderation.

See above.
I believe in gravity. I can’t see it. Does that qualify?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

I used to believe in competent referees, but I can’t see one.

I believe that ideas exist independently of their realization. This explains convergent evolution – how, for example, vertebrates insects and molluscs could independently develop visual systems. The idea was out there and natural selection moved the different types of organism to similar embodiments of the same idea.

I also subscribe the Richard Dawkins’ meme concept. Looked at one way, we are merely the vessels that allow ideas to spread from one person to another, providing a means by which those that are superior will win out.

Aside from the faith answers,
Wind, air, love, pain, compassion, fear, ..... You may see evidence of these and more but they are not tangible.

Of course! I “believe in” atoms and molecules. I believe in gravity.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I believe in all the forces that combined to create this universe.
