New apartment: How do I help my dog settle in?

Asked by longgone (19715points) March 30th, 2015

My Lab is ten, and she’s usually a very reliable dog. However, I just took her along for seeing my new flat, and she was panting and shaking. I’d hate for her to associate our new place with feeling stressed. We’ve moved before, but she was a lot younger then.

First idea I’ve had is to take a Kong along for the next visits, and leave when she’s done licking. Any other ideas?

Bring one of her blankets, beds or other smelly toys over and leave it there for when you visit next. Put small treats on the floor for her to find.

Bring an object of comfort like @janbb said. Most dogs have a blanket or bed they absolutely love. We moved my German Shorthair and we brought his favorite blanket along with his squeaky duck toy along just incase he was worried, and it worked perfectly.

Believe it or not tire them out take them for a long walk around the neighborhood to burn off their nervous energy it will help to relax them by the time you take them back to the new house and yes of course bring their bowls and toys that they are familiar with to the new place.

When you are in the apartment, then she will start to settle down. For now, she is afraid that you are going to leave her there alone.

Do you know anything about the previous tenants? Did they have pets? I once moved into a place where both the dog and the cat freaked out upon walking in the door. I found out fairly quickly that the previous tenant had regularly abused their dog. I guessed that the scent of the stress and fear hormones had lingered. After I had the carpets deep-cleaned the critters relaxed.
Just a thought.

^ Very interesting idea, and what a sad thought. No, I don’t know anything about the previous tenants.

I’ll bring her bed tomorrow, and tiring her out beforehand is a good idea, too. She definitely was very worried about me leaving her alone!

If she keeps being this upset, I may try an Adaptil spray… Her reaction to the flat was just extremely atypical.

Thanks, all. If you think of any more suggestions, go ahead!

Get her a nice comfy bed to sleep on. Then feed her 2 cans of Alpo.

I can’t believe you asked this question. My dogs get really hyper and anxious at night. They’ve been driving us crazy wrestling and stuff when we are trying to watch tv.
I ordered this and it just arrived today. I plugged it in and my dogs were asleep and mellow before we even turned on the TV!
I was thinking about how amazing it was when I read your question.
We can’t smell it but something about it made Axel and Gretel really calm tonight.

She fell asleep in the new flat today! Her own bed, lots of chew toys, and visitors she loves did the trick. Thanks, everyone!

Can’t you get plug in pheromone dispensers that help them to calm down. That might help to counter any other pet smells. Glad she’s settling down now.

^ Yes, thanks. I’m keeping that in mind for when we actually move in.

Good for the new pup, too!
