Truly a sad day for Rock fans everywhere - join me in saying goodbye to Gary Ross Dahl! Wasn't he one of the greats?

Who was Gary Ross Dahl, you ask?

Inventor of the Pet Rock link

A great fad while it lasted. Did you own a pet rock?

Do not scare my like that.
I first thought you meant Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
THAT would have been a tragedy.

And I thought he was a member of a Rock band :)

And, no, I didn’t have a pet rock. I had more urgent things (like rent, food, gasoline) which required my hard-earned money :)

I couldn’t afford to buy or maintain a pet rock, so I had to settle for peanut shells.

RIP, Mr. Dahl.

I knew someone who had a pet rock. They found it upside down one day, and decided it must of died. They had a funeral for it, and we all sang Rock Of Ages.

Gonna sleep among his pets.

His is a mixed legacy. His attempts to standardize the rocks involved extensive inbreeding that led to some unfortunate frailties, especially among the igneous rocks. The basalt, although beautiful and even-tempered, was often riddled with hairline fractures as a result of its abnormally large crystal size.

@filmfann – were you stoned at the time?

My favorite was the Weather Rock

Who can forget?

Here’s a refresher on how to analyze the much revered stone:

If the rock is wet, it’s raining.
If the rock is swinging, the wind is blowing.
If the rock casts a shadow, the sun is shining.
If the rock does not cast a shadow and is not wet, the sky is cloudy.
If the rock is not visible, it is foggy.
If the rock is white, it is snowing.
If the rock is coated with ice, there is a frost.
If the ice is thick, it’s a heavy frost.
If the rock is bouncing, there is an earthquake.
If the rock is under water, there is a flood.
If the rock is warm, it is sunny.
If the rock is missing, there was a tornado.
If the rock is wet and swinging violently, there is a hurricane.
If the rock has white splats on it, watch out for birds.
