Should religion be completely kept out of politics in America?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) April 3rd, 2015 from iPhone

Not allow religious based questions.

We wouldn’t be able to ask a candidate about his religious beliefs. He would not be able to tout his religion as a selling point in advertising and speeches.

What do you think?

Actually, speech like this provides useful information to me as a voter. If a candidate seems inclined to let religious beliefs influence policy decisions, I’d much rather know that up front. Besides, a candidate who’s trying to appeal to religious voters will always find “dog whistle” ways to signal their sympathies without overtly stating them.

I just wondering what the penalty would be? Barred from public office? Imprisoned? what’s the penalty for saying ‘God Bless you’ if someone sneezes? Surely there arte other kinds of speech that are just as offensive as religious speech. Maybe it would be better to define what can be said rather than what can’t.

hominid's avatar

Absolutely not. This is a violation of free speech.

elbanditoroso's avatar

I wish that could be the case. But in the 21st century American environment, it will never happen.

A politician’s religion, beliefs, etc., are no one else’s business.

josie's avatar

Tough to do since God and Jesus have their fingerprints all over the Western world, and in the US in no less a sense than the entire basis for establishing human liberty as a natural state, your life as sacred, and the product of your efforts yours to keep. Plus the basis for just about everything that we call legal justice.
How you going to uproot all of that?
Do you think an atheist like me would ever get elected president? In either party?

josie's avatar

Plus, wouldn’t you want to know if a candidate was a card carrying member of the Muslim Brotherhood?
I would prefer a New Testament reading Christian over the Al-Shabaab candidate any day of the year.

dappled_leaves's avatar

Seems like a no-brainer to me. Those candidates who want to talk religion while campaigning are pretty much pandering to their religious voters; I wouldn’t assume they’re being honest about their intentions. After all, they can’t prove they believe what they believe. At least policy can be fact-checked with voting records.

And while they govern, I certainly don’t want to hear that their decisions are influenced by religious beliefs.

@elbanditoroso“I wish that could be the case.”

Out of curiosity, why would you wish this to be the case? And why do you feel that “religion, beliefs, etc” are no one else’s business? Do our beliefs not inform our actions? What could we possibly ask a candidate? Could we ask about their position on climate change? What about marriage equality?

Blackberry's avatar

Well if course, but that’s not the reality. I’m sure we all would agree religious institutions shouldn’t have covered up child abuse, but they did and it’ll continue to happen.

stanleybmanly's avatar

How could this possibly be achieved? Aren’t we better off allowing candidates to discuss and pander to whatever they choose? How else are we to gauge the fools and charlatans?

kritiper's avatar

ABSOLUTELY!!! No ifs, ands, or buts!

SQUEEKY2's avatar

ABSOLUTELY!! But not just America I would love to see it in every country on earth, I have no problem with religion or religious people but lets keep it out of politics.

Espiritus_Corvus's avatar

I think we should be able to ask whatever we wish and they should be able to answer whatever they wish. My only objection to religion and its effect on government is when it infringes on our democratic and civil rights, our school curricula, our access to our government, and so on. I don’t see where this does that at all. I think it’s gauche to ask, but if other people want to, fire away.

rojo's avatar

I think a persons religious beliefs are something that they should be entitled to keep to themselves. No one should have to prove that they are more holy that the other candidate in order to win office.

rojo's avatar

@josie do you think we should elect a pot smoking gay black female atheist just to watch the mass suicides that would occur in the conservative faction?

religion Should be allowed. But if they should allow others to Not be religious. While maintaining moral respectful laws and conduct.

i BELIEVE THAT Islam Is the worst of all in promoting SLAVERY . Slavery is a Part of their enslavement Religion,

The Americans took Slaves from Countries , Where they were Already Slaves. Americans – Brought them over to America. And Put them To work. The Americans Fed them, clothed them and put them in Shelters, and took Care of them. ————-the African Slaves would have Shipped away, to Penile Colonies and work and mining CAMPS throughout Africa, Middle East and

South America and other Places.

The Americans DID SOMETHING that no Other Country did.

The Germans Had Slaves. But they Were Smart enough to not bring them all to Germany.

The English and ITALIANS and FRENCH and SPANISH and PORTUGUESE and Nearly EVERY single Major Superpower All Had Slaves.

But they Were Smart enough to not bring them to their Home Country. They Knew better. they INSTEAD Worked them to death in other Places. Mining, Fishing, Sailing, FIGHTING WARS, Farming, Building and Working——- in other Lands, Far, Far away.

These Other Countries – USED and ABUSED and beat and starved them to death, MANY TIMES> – and Left them with nothing, No Future, no Hope, NOTHING> But emptiness and sorrow.

.The United States, however BOUGHT and Brought these slaves OVER and INTO – their Homeland in mass Quantity. By the tens of Thousands.

they Put them to work, but never intended to Incorporate and ADAPT or CONVERT America, to changing to the Mentality, Government and ideas and Religion of the Africans.

The Americans Took Care of, Fed, Vaccinated and eventually made them Citizens. It is true that SOME Americans were cruel and mean and mistreated slaves. But not all SLAVE-OWNERS did this !.

NOTICE that these other Countries .. ESPECIALLY in ISLAM.

For the last 1300 Years of Islam. BLACKS Are not Allowed to have political Leadership Positions. There are no Blacks in Leadership / Politics———in Islam. They Don’t ALLOW it.

Germany, Italy, Spain, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Britain EVERY Single last Country on the Planet. Does not Allow a

Black MAN to become King or President. ESPECIALLY ISLAM.

In islam. Blacks are Never, Never, Never EVER allowed to have FULL and COMPLETE Citizenship Status . to be allowed to Participate in the POSITIONS of Kings and Queens.

Allah Does NOT know best. Allah is a Deceiving, Lying Fraud. All muslims are unfaithful to TRUTH,

God Bless the USA. where All Races and religions are allowed to Participate in every part of Life and Freedom.

I pray that we never become – CORRUPT – like the Followers of Allah. America Loves all People of all religion all races. FREE to Be Kings, leaders, Policemen, Judges and Full Freedoms..

islam has never, never, never allowed this. after 1300 years. muslims still have no respect for Blacks.

After 150 Years the USA made All Blacks into FREEMEN, And Fights through the planet to Free all Blacks.

Muslims are still butchering and Enslaving people in Africa. While other Muslims do NOTHING to stop it. !

I’m going to show you some pictures because I suspect this is probably the most effective way of communicating with you. But first, take a look at the following maps:

Map of Africa: The dominant religions This map shows the dominant religions in various parts of the African continent. All of the northern portion of Africa, Saharan Africa and much of the Sub-sahara is solidly Muslim according to this map.

Bear with me, I know this might be difficult for you.

Map of Africa: Ethnolinguistics This is a map of Africa depicting the various “races” and where they reside on the African continent.

Here are pictures of the majority of the people who live in those parts of Africa that is shown on the first map to be predominantly Muslim:

Afro-Asiatic peoples
Nilo-Saharan peoples
Niger-Congolese peoples

With very few exceptions, all of the people in the pictures you have just seen are followers of the Islamic faith. They might have a problem with your “Truths” concerning the statements you have made here relating to blacks and Islam.

@planetsreign.

I just spend over four years living in Saudi Arabia. You can say a lot of negatives about Islam, but pritty much all you said is nonsense.
