Are there computer viruses that prevent you from going to certain sites?

Asked by LostInParadise (32168points) April 4th, 2015

I find that there are certain sites that I can no longer reach, Yahoo for example, which is my home page. If I go to the command line and do a ping on yahoo, there is no problem. Could this be caused by a virus?

Nevermind. Now I can reach the sites. Maybe there was a problem with my Internet provider.

Yes. Browser hijackers do this.

It sounds more like a HOSTS.INI issue, but technically, such a virus is possible.

Some time ago I encountered this problem. As @jerv said, first of all you need to check your hosts.ini file, deleting all except the first line, run antivirus and reinstall the browser. Usually it helps.
