Sigh.
“I know you can be overwhelmed, and you can be underwhelmed, but can you ever just be whelmed?”
Don’t conflate the seeming appearance of at the prefix “super-” to assume a root of ”-stitious”.
The whole word has remained pretty much contact since the classic Latin, superstitio, which was a formation of beliefs which “stood over” one.
@syz “When I read this question I was whelmed”?
Like @zenvelo said, it comes from the Latin super (“over”) and stare (“to stand”). Which makes sense since the opposite of superstition is understanding.
A stand or point of view. A position on a subject. A notion.
