Are Judo techniques still effective on an attacker that doesn't wear a shirt?

Asked by Eggie (5926points) April 10th, 2015

I see from Judo videos that most of the throwing techniques are done on someone with a Gi, and they usually start by gripping the Gi. I want to know if the throws would still be applicable if you are fighting someone who is bareback or wearing a vest. Aside from the rear naked choke, are the other throwing techniques in Judo still effective?

Yes, it turns into more of a wrestling match.

Judo is absolutely effective in no-gi situations. Often in street fights, in any case, people are wearing a jacket or similar while will often do the job, certainly for many chokes. But if we’re talking bare body, then there are still LOTS of judo techniques that are super effective. I’ve trained with several judo black-belts in no-gi grappling scenarios and I can testify their effectiveness!

I haven’t taken judo (Jiu Jitsu yes, Judo no), but they work on similar principles. Judo is all about using momentum and taking down your opponent. So as long as a threat has some momentum involved in the scenario then it’s effective shirt or no shirt.

Now if they aren’t moving at all, Judo, isn’t as effective, but then if they aren’t moving, you probably don’t need to take them down right?
