When I gently rub some tp on a bathroom faucet there is some brownish goo that comes off. What is it and how did it get there?

Sounds like shit. I won’t speculate further.

maybe mould infused with iron oxide?

Where would mold and iron oxide come from? This would be unsafe to drink.

metal + water + oxygen = rust
And i suppose the mold would find similar conditions on a faucet as on bathroom tiles. damp and warm.

The water itself is clear. This is some oily brownish smudge directly on the faucet like on the washer.

It is rust. As the rust comes through in the water, it’s small particles of oxidized iron accumulating at the faucet end. It builds up, but since it is small particles, it makes itself a sludge. I doubt there is mold.

Iron oxide won’t hurt you in small amounts of water. It keeps your iron levels up.

I’m sure I’ve seen it before on Ghostbusters. I’d call Bill.

Thanks so much! I didn’t think it was anything directly in the water because , although it tastes bad, the water is clear.
I don’t drink it; and I’m anemic. Or I was anemic. I feel great now after 3 iron pills per day for 3 weeks.
