How many women have died in violent circumstances in your country since the start of 2015?

Asked by Earthbound_Misfit (13177points) April 16th, 2015

As of 16 April 2015, 31 women have been violently killed in Australia since the start of the year. Some were killed by strangers, others by their current or former partners. How many women have been killed in violent circumstances (including domestic violence situations) in your country? How much attention does this problem receive where you live?

We can’t even keep track of how many people cops kill. Pretty sure we don’t care about the statistics for women.

You don’t care how many women are the victims of violence in your country @johnpowell? That’s disturbing. I know you have a higher level of violent crime in the US, but I hope we never reach the point where we don’t care about how many people are victims of violence and who those victims are.

Not enough a lot of women go missing every year especially first nation women and the cops barely even notice, but as an average joe blow what can one really do about it?
I always tell Mrs Squeeky DO NOT walk alone at night and be aware of your surroundings but what more can a person do?

I don’t know what we can do about it Mr @SQUEEKY2. However, I think it starts with acknowledging how many women are victims of violence. The numbers get lost (as @johnpowell has highlighted) but if we don’t know how many women are being killed and suffering violence, we can’t pressure our governments to do something about it. I know about the situation over there with First Nations women and how many have gone missing, and it’s frightening.

Nobody has been killed by terrorists in Australia since January 1st, and yet we put many resources and $$$ into protecting ourselves. Yet women are beaten and killed every day of the week and it’s not a priority. So, perhaps what we do starts with making sure we know how many women are victims and that we start to make it clear we want it to stop.

I care… The cops don’t and don’t get together to compile statistics.

I think that happens here too @johnpowell, but there’s a movement to recognise how many women are victims and it’s working. The Australian of the Year is a women who’s been a victim of domestic violence and her son was murdered by her former partner who then killed himself. We have meetings with all our Heads of State and Federal Government happening at the moment and domestic violence is on their agenda and its getting more media attention. This isn’t going to solve the problem, but it brings it out into the open and that can only have a positive outcome.

It made me wonder what awareness there was of the number of women dying in our own countries in violent circumstances each year. Thanks for your responses @johnpowell and I’m glad you do care. I’d be surprised if you didn’t. That’s not the impression you’ve given elsewhere.

Here’s a site from the FBI, for murders (and other crimes). The latest I can find is 2013. About 9500 male murder victims and 2700 female for that year. I’m sure you could get a trend by looking through all this but it’s not all that user friendly.

Local governments don’t really talk to state governments. State governments don’t talk to each other. None of them want to talk to the feds. Thus, we’re consistently two or more years behind in estimates as to crimes committed nationwide. There’s no way to know what has happened in the last four months.

I don’t know the statistics on violent deaths of women in Canada this year, but a lot of attention is now being given in the media to the problem of missing and murdered aboriginal women, partly because our Conservative government refuses to acknowledge that this is a serious problem in this country.

I don’t know, but I guess there are many. Traffic accidents, murders, suicides… But then again, only the most disturbing go to the papers. I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more that are unreported. Not to mention some newspapers tend to distort facts for shock value…

This particular case has received a huge amount of attention.

I also couldn’t find anything. The only thing I did find was that 3 women are killed a day on average for the United States. So that would mean that it is about 324 dead by now. Although I am not sure if the stats include random murders or just murders by some relation.

The problem with crime is like the proverbial Barn door. Murder is where we need to focus. Capturing and sentencing criminals has proven to be use less. The person is already dead. We need to focus on future deaths and work on preventing them. We need to learn to identify those who hang on threads and are possible threats. And we need to look at struggling families and offer them the tools they need get help before it is too late. And we need to teach our young in school how and why to value each life.

The way our system works is like a guy using a condom with his 9 month pregnant girlfriend. Well its too late. Can make the baby vanish that way. We need to work on preventing all violent acts. There is no man who would only respect all women but hat men enough to kill them. People who hate one set of people with passion often lack empathy for anyone who isn’t them. They just pick on women because they are weaker physically and they are cowards. But if most felt they could get away without a scrape in beating a guy, they would do it too. Its the same idea behind someone who kills puppies but won’t touch a full grown pit bull.

What I do know is the chance of a woman being killed by a male spouse, in a situation where there already is violence in the home, goes up significantly immediately following her leaving. She needs to leave to get away from the violence and imprisonment, but when she leaves the real threat of serious harm or death is statistically heightened.

Statistics I found vary a little. If we look at stats in the US of a man killing a woman, it looks like it hovers around 1800 per year. 1800 out of 330 million people, or about 170 million women. How many people live in Australia? I think you have to look at percentages, not just whole numbers.
