Can you move your little toe separately?

Asked by lugerruger (785points) April 17th, 2015

I can move my little toe separately, by separately I mean I can move it without moving any of my other toes with it. No one I know can do it, so I’m just wondering if anyone on here can do it or if it’s just one of my weird talents. Thanks in advance.

I can do it. I can also move my eyebrows, nostrils, and ears separately. I think it’s a side effect of meditation. I call them “Stupid Buddhist Tricks,” because they occur entirely without effort through biofeedback. There’s a simple experiment to demonstrate the phenomenon:

Get a straw from a straw broom and impale it edge-on on a flat tack. Lie down on your back and balance the tack on your breastbone. The end of the straw will now move visibly each time your heart beats. Now just watch the straw for about an hour. At this point, through biofeedback, you will be able to take control of your heart and make it slow down or speed up simply by desiring it to do so.

All of this occurs because connections in the brain run in both directions. When you feel a rush of endorphins in your brain, you smile to express pleasure; because of this connection, we can also induce the brain to produce endorphins by consciously smiling. Through meditation and intense awareness of your body, you’re doing exactly the same thing as when you watch the vibrating end of the straw: you begin becoming consciously aware of each of the individual nerve signals which make up the cascade of complex signals we normally use to move our bodies autonomically.

I have actually never tried. Thanks for letting me know that.

I myself cannot, but I can do bunny shadows with my feet.

I can move them back and forth, but not bend them. Both have been broken at least once or twice.

No. I also can’t bend my pinky fingers without the ring fingers also bending.

I can’t even find my little toe, it hides under the next biggest one.

I can move my large toe by itself. I can move the four other toes by themselves. If I press on the floor I can move the three middle toes. I am never going to be able to sew using my feet.

I vaguely recall seeing on television one time a woman who could not use her hands (they might have been amputated, I don’t recall exactly), but who had extraordinary dexterity with her feet. Maybe it is partly a matter of training.

@LostInParadise Are you talking about the girl without arms who can change a diaper, fold clothes, cook food, and basically everything else with her feet?

Apparently not.
Just tried. Both feet will not cooperate, infact, all my other toes move except the little one, they just won’t move, at all. Oh well..I am, however, virtually tickle proof, will not flinch pretty much whatever you try to do to me. haha

Almost. My big toe kind moves a little bit. Maybe with more practice, but…meh. I can move my eyebrows separately though. Some people seem to find it a tad entertaining. having a unibrow might have something to do with that though haha.

I vaguely remember reading something about this, along with variations on people’s ability to perform tricks with their tongues. I seem to remember that the toe tricks could be accomplished with practice by most people, but the ability to roll your tongue into a cylinder depended solely on your “wiring”.

@cheebdragon , That might be the person. I remember that the woman was able to live a rather normal life. It was quite a while ago that I saw the television show, so if you are talking about something comparatively recent it is probably someone else. If one person can adjust then others should also be able to.

No. My four small toes all move together.

Which foot?
Mine seem to be of different minds.

jaytkay's avatar

Yes. I can also say “Live long and prosper” with my feet.

I will use my ability always for good. With great power comes great responsibility.

chyna's avatar

Yes I can.

Strangely, I can move separately only the right foot’s small toe, not the left one.
