Do you think an introvert would rather participate in team sports or an individual sport?

Asked by nutallergy (958points) April 19th, 2015

I’m an introvert that prefers participating in individual sports and I do poorly in team sports.

Do you think this is common with introverts?

I know each individual is different, but I was wondering how the introverts of Fluther felt about this topic.

I don’t know if I am really a introvert but I do prefer individual sports rather than team sports .

I was an introvert as a kid, and I got a (middle school) medal (my only sport’s) in the (then unpopular) sport of soccer.

I was good at track, but it was too regimented. Then if I won, there was the embarrassment of being singled out in front of a crowd.

If I was really good at a sport, I’d prefer to hide behind a team, personally.

I am an ambivert, nither introvert nor extrovert. Just happily in the middle.

I have always preferred individual sports to team sports. At some I was good, at others not so much. But I liked being able to enjoy when my body moved and I was able to accomplish something. So I skied, and rock climbed, and rode a bicycle, and now I run.

I’m an introvert. I did well in high school wrestling, X-Country, and track. Did poorly in water polo. I never even tried any other team sports. I’m not a team player. I don’t like to have to depend on others. Just myself. As an adult I love participating in running events of all distances up to full marathon and sprint triathlons.

Lately I’ve been trying dragon boat racing and outrigger canoe racing. It is all about team work and it is very difficult and slightly painful. But I’m trying to learn and grow from it.

I am an introvert.

Is scouring used bookstores to flesh out a scifi novel collection consisted a sport?

I prefer individual.

I’m an extrovert and I preferred individual, but for the most part I am not competitive, and I don’t feel I am very sports oriented. I think probably the type of sports you like is not related to being an introvert or extrovert, even though I see why people might guess they are.

Many actors are introverts, and yet they get on stage in front of thousands of people.

I used to be introverted. Now I’m neither introverted or extroverted. Or maybe I’m both. I played plenty of team sports as a kid, but as an adult I’m only really interested in individual sports. I don’t like formal competitions, but I’ve tried mountain biking, weight lifting, martial arts, and I’ve done plenty of obstacle courses.

I’m not sure it’s the introverted or extroverted side of me that directed my choice of physical activity though. It is more that I am fiercely competitive. In individual pursuits, if I fail, it is my fault alone, and if I succeed it is my efforts alone that got me there. I never used to like being either above or below average on a team. Now there’s only me, being awesome.

I would prefer individual sports.

I’m an ambivert too, an extrovert by nature but my particular personalty type is known as the most introverted extrovert. As my profile says I am part social butterfly and part hermit. Works for me.
I always preferred individual sports.

I am not a sports type anyway. I liked bicycling, horses, rafting and hiking. I do not do balls of any kind. Not golf balls, volley balls, baseballs and softballs, basketballs, footballs, soccer balls. I hate all sports that involve balls. lol

I’m an introvert and track was my main sport and talent. I did well in wrestling and basketball also but I dominated on the track. These days it’s mountain biking and usually alone. I don’t mind company so long as our pace is roughly equivalent.

@Coloma wrote, “I hate all sports that involve balls.” Does that rule out recreational sex with men? lol

Or, are you like me, and content to leave the athletic positions to my children’s generation?!

I’m an introvert and prefer solo sports. But I think it’s because I find connecting up with a sufficient number of people for team sports is more difficult as an adult. It can be tough to coordinate schedules around everyone’s family and work responsibilities.

I did enjoy team sports throughout my school years.

@bossob LOL..I have much more skill with balls attached to men rather than balls made out of leather, rubber and plastic. haha

Individual for me. I prefer running and little interaction with the other competitors.
