What's the best band name you've ever heard?

Asked by CugelTheClueless (1542points) April 23rd, 2015

Not asking about the music, just the name of the band. What’s the most original, most humorous, or just plain coolest name for a band that you’ve ever heard? Let’s limit it to bands that have had at least one paid public performance.

I pick Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. Who wouldn’t want to play in a band with a name that great?

Maybe not the best or coolest, but it’s a band name one never forgets.

Nickel back. .. the lead singer used to work as a baristra and charged $1.95 and would give a nickel back from a two dollar coin.

Three Dog Night. I think.

I always thought “Empire of the Sun” was a cool name. “Rage Against the Machine” and “Pepper” too. Keeping music out of the decision of course… Different names for different genres.

I’m picking If It Ain’t Breakfast Don’t Fix It and To Separate the Flesh From the Bones. The first actually sounds pretty good to me though I don’t know much about them. The second’s a grindcore band with ties to other bands I like. I love the name, but never have cared for grindcore.

They are way older than me, and a generation removed, but I still the The Rolling Stones is a pretty cool name for a band.

I was recently reminded of The Flaming Lips and I like both the band and the name, Bare Naked Ladies. I first heard of Southern Culture On the Skids when I bought their album, Plastic Seat Sweat.

Something recently made me think of Cereal Killer, a band name they were forced to change from Green Jello.

Finally a nod to Asleep at the Wheel, a name that I feel refers to a lifestyle rather than driving a vehicle. lol

The only thing I think of aside from Kajagoogoo is Insane Clown Posse.

I love that band name too and for those who don’t know the origin of the name , it’s interesting.

“The official commentary included in the CD set Celebrate: The Three
Dog Night Story, 1964–1975 states that vocalist Danny Hutton’s girlfriend,
actress June Fairchild (best known as the “Ajax Lady” from the Cheech
and Chong movie Up In Smoke) suggested the name after reading a
magazine article about indigenous Australians, in which it was explained
that on cold nights they would customarily sleep in a hole in the ground
while embracing a dingo (feral dog). On colder nights they would sleep
with two dogs and, if the night was freezing, it was a “three dog night”

Twisted Sister is the name that comes to me first. I never liked the name much yet it sticks with me. I saw it on posters when they were still a local Long Island band. There are so many crazy names for bands now, and cool ones.

Some others that I like:
Deep Dark Woods
Counting Crows

My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult.
Not as fun when they shorten it to just Thrill Kill Kult.

Throbbing Gristle was also a great name.

Thanks, that was a new one on me, @jb, and loads of fun.

Aww, someone already claimed Anal Cunt.

Fine, then I’ll add Anal Blast, Assück, Dying Fetus, the Circle Jerks, Torture Killer, Deicide, and Nashville Pussy.

I have a certain fondness for extraordinarily long band names, like Clinging to the Trees of a Forest Fire, and very short names, like 3.

My partner’s band is called Ulcer, which manages to invoke the desired gut reaction (har har) while remaining open to interpretation.

Coloma's avatar

@Uasal I was watchig a german film last night with some seriously lost in translation subtitles.
One scene you see a man and a donkey coming up the road and the subtitle read “Sound of ass.” LOL

There’s a name for you. haha

As @ibstubro said: My first thought was the Barenakedladies. It’s not so much a “cool band name” as it is marketing genius in my opinion.

jonsblond's avatar

@ibstubro yeah, yeah. Couldn’t think of any others so I started a new one.

“Sloppy seconds”—> an old friends cover band. Thought the name was brilliant.

And guided by voices of course.

They actually put on some of the best rock shows I have ever seen.

Uasal's avatar

@Coloma – that is brilliant!
There’s a band I like called Sepultura. They’re from Brazil. When the band first started none of the guys spoke English very well, so the first album has really badly translated titles and lyrics. “The Past Reborns the Storms,” “If you are a false don’t entry,” and such.

fundevogel's avatar

@Uasal I saw Dying Fetus play with Cannibal Corpse years ago! As I recall they put on the better set :)

Oh and a few years bcak I discovered one of my made up band names was being used by an actaul band: The Definite Articles. I wish found them as enjoyable as the their name.

My son was in a ska band called “Straight on Red” in high school. We all thought it was pretty clever.

Nowt particularly unusual or hardcore, but I think it’s a pretty fucking cool name for a band.

I loved the 90’s music, 3 Doors Down, Maroon 5, Sublime, Creed, Hootie and the Blowfish. I must whip out some 90’s tunes here tonight.

Ooh ooh! True story:

The first great love of my life was a good little church boy named Kevin. (He, of course, never loved me back. Turns out he is so, so very gay, but that’s a different story) His birthday came ‘round and I bought him a gift. See, he was learning to play drums so he could play in the church worship band, so I grabbed him a couple of pairs of drumsticks from Spencer’s Gifts (which is an adult-oriented novelty store in many American shopping malls).

He was so damned proud of his Lamb of God (video) drumsticks… I never told him.

ibstubro's avatar

Did you know the reference when you bought the sticks, @Uasal?

ibstubro's avatar

Blue Oyster Cult
Heard on the radio and I thought of this questions.

Uasal's avatar

Yes, but I was probably going to hell anyway. Hahaha

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

^^ Blue Oyster Cult
Come to think of it, that sounds cooler than Kajagoogoo or Insane Clown Posse

I’m changing my first pick to Big Brother and the Holding Company, with Commander Cody etc. a close second. Don’t know why I seem to gravitate to those “_____ and the _____s” – type names.

janbb's avatar

Has anyone mentioned “Mott the Hoople” yet? Great, great name.
