Bit-O-Honey, Mary Janes, and Squirrel Nut Zippers: do you find the differences pronounced or subtle?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) April 23rd, 2015

Although I’ve never sat down and had a taste test, I’ve always equated Bit-O-Honey and Mary Janes. I’ve not tried Squirrel Nut Zippers, but they seem very similar.

Give us your take?
If you have a local or regional product that’s similar, vote it in or link us to it?
DO NOT be afraid to have FUN with the question!
Believe it or not, Fluther used to be a place of occasional freewheeling fun and joy.
I remind myself, as I cannot remember a great derailment. Pity.

They’re all gross.

I’ll murder some Heath bars, though.

I’m all fpor joyful and zany derailment, so here I go.
Never heard of Mary Janes & Squirrel nut zippers, only Bit-o-honey. So…that’s all I’ve got. However…humor of the day, a friend had bought a generic brand of Dr. Pepper recently called , I kid you not..” Dr. Tremor.” LMAO.

I was too scared to drink any with a name like that.

When I was a kid, I always assumed all three were the confectionary equivalent of “I used to have to walk 5 miles to school with no shoes” parental statements. They existed to elicit empathy from kids, who would wonder how their parents could have endured having to eat them.

All three tasted the same – like broken teeth and broken dreams.

Bit-o-Honey and Mary Janes are basically the same to me. If there is a difference I don’t eat them enough to notice it. I like them very much. I also like Peanut Chews, which are very hard to find and a blast from the past.

Never heard of either.
Is that like the difference between the various Kebab shops?

jaytkay and I had a wild and crazy derailment on a General thread that had run its course just last week. You’re looking for lurve in all the wrong places @ibstubro.

Squirrel Nut Zippers is big band jazz, though this song has a bit more rumba.
Bit-O-Honey is classical.
Mary Janes is a soul/funk.

I like them all and they seem about the same to me. Squirrel nut zippers are probably the best though. I can still get them where I live.

Locally a drink called Dr. Enuf is something I seek out and get when I want a soda. It’s nothing like dr. pepper, it’s an herbal soda.

Peanut Chews are at The Dollar Tree, @JLeslie.

Locally there is a pop in a glass bottle that is Butter Beer. Like drinking butterscotch or caramel. Delicious! Made in Branson Missouri.

They’re all the same tooth breaking wolf in sheep’s clothing.

They don’t break teeth. They pull them. Not as well as Jolly Ranchers, so you may have to chew a few.
When very fresh, Mary-Janes and Bit-O-Honey aren’t significantly different from the peanut butter chews you get at Halloween, with nut bits instead of peanut butter. They’re taffy.
Just like fresh Maple Nut Goodies with be soft and chewy in the middle. You can get the same effect if you warm them slightly…like leaving a bag in the sun for awhile.

When I was much younger I stole a Mary Jane from my mom’s coworker’s desk. It didn’t take long for me to regret it. That thing was nasty.
