Should morons be forgiven?

Asked by josie (30934points) April 28th, 2015

Is being stupid a mitigating circumstance before moral judgement?
Or is it a moral imperative to avoid stupidity.
And if we are guilty of stupidity, aren’t we morally obligated to do something about that.
Lots of critters have brains.
Only humans have a mind.
If we do not develop our minds, we are stupid, and really no better than a cow or a dog. Who have brains, but no mind.
So what is the excuse for stupidity?

A moron must be forgiven. If the equipment isn’t there, where’s the fault? There must be some minimum level of intellect present in an individual before he or she can be considered morally culpable. To me, stupidity involves possessing the ability to learn, but choosing to do otherwise.

Unless stupidity causes harm to others, I have no problem.

And even if it does cause harm, one can’t really accuse someone just because they are stupid.

Mama always said this type of question lands in the let he without sin category and that’s all I’ve got to say about that.

Well, so long as they know their role and allow themselves to be subjugated to those that actually use their heads for something other than a hatrack or a way to get deep-fried food to their stomachs, I have no problem with them.

As for the morons that try to get others in on their brand of stupid (notably Sarah Palin and Ted Cruz), there*is* no forgiving them. I cannot think of any penance that would suffice.

I’d immediately rule out the military, unforgiven.

Forgive them for they know not what they do.

Stupidity and ignorance are two different things. I don’t think they should be confused.

Of course they should be forgiven, they just shouldn’t breed the world already has enough morons we don’t need any more.

But there’s the tricky part. A moron is incapable of the realization that it might be “moronic” for him or her to breed.
